Can't for the life of me figure out how to create holes in clothing

Editing an image to include a transparent hole does not work. How exactly could I create something like that? Just a simple hole in a shirt or pants.

  • If you're just chopping  a hole in a texure in PS, it'll only work if the texture map is applied to all relevant channels, diffuse for instance.

nominally you may want to create a transparency map.

For iray they go in the Cutout opacity channel.

For holes the area to be transparent has to be greyscale, with white opaque and black transparent, inbetween wil produce variant levels of transparency..

You can use either a texture map, diffuse channel, or the UV map(template) to create the map.

If you're using photoshop create a a new layer over top the texture map/template and go to town.

  • Any step by step guide with gimp? Thats the only program I'm used to. Sorry. I'm just rather confused with all this.

  • figured it out! Make a cut within the texture and make the same cut on a full white layer. what you cut out on that seperate layer, make it black and put it in the cutout opacity tab. Thanks for the help, it led me to figuring it out

  • At least it pointed ya in the right direction.

Sorry i couldn't help with gimp, i don't have any familiarity with it.
