GTX 1070 and HDRI environments

Hi All,

I'm running DAZ with a GTX 1070. I noticed that DAZ switches to CPU-only rendering when rendering certain scenes even though total video memory consumption (according to GPU-Z) is under 8GB. I did a bit of experimenting and noticed that if I used an HDRI environment instead of a "regular" environment, DAZ would render the scene in GPU-only mode with no issues under the same video memory load (< 8GB). Any ideas why switching to HDRI environment causes this kind of behavior? Thanks.

...HDRI's tend to be lighter on the load than using a lot of scene geometry.  In turn, high resolution textures tend to be "heavier" then geometry.  Both together can add up quick.

To get an idea of ho much Daz and the scene take up in memory open Task Manager and look at the Daz Studio entry in the Processes tab.  That will tell you how much physical memory the scene and programme are using.

Also what OS do you have?

Windows 10, 64. Physical memory is about 27GB for non-HDRIs and about 15GB for HDRI.

  • Would a GTX 1080 be able to handle (100% GPU rendering) a 30GB physical memory / 11 GB video memory scene?

...ahh there's part of the rub.  W10 reserves a "noticeable" percentage of VRAM, so instead of 8 GB you have around 6.5 GB available for rendering. GPUZ. will only show the total that the card has for driving the displays, rendering etc.

15 GB for the HDRI version still sounds like a pretty big scene.  What is your total system memory?

My largest scene is around 9 GB (all geometry and a skydome), and I tend to use multiple figures (8 - 10), lots of effects, large detailed sets (like those by Stonemason), and various special effects like reflection, haze & fog.

I got 32 GB total memory

I have a 1080 & it  has the same amount of memory as the 1070 (8GB) so if your scene won't fit on the 1070 it will be the same for the 1080

The 1080TI has 11 GB so that may work for you although before you spend all that extra money I would try optimizing the scene to reduce the amount of memory you are needing/

If you are happy to pay for a product then I can recommend

    https://www.daz3d.com/scene-optimizer

You can instead use the texture reducer script available in the freebie forum.

    Thanks. I'll take a look at https://www.daz3d.com/scene-optimizer. Sorry, I meant the 1080TI (11GB).

...27 GB for the non HDRI scene file would crash my system as the MB only supports a maximum of 24 GB (3 channel DDR3 and a first generation 4 core/8 thread i7).  Don't have the resoruces to go to a newer system with more memory as I am on a fixed income.  I can't even afford a 1060 6 GB let alone a 1080 Ti.

Basically, I'd need a small windfall.
