Returning user; can I re-purpose old assets for new figures? and questions about assets in games

Hi all,

I've been with this site for I don't even remember how long; I did start buying late but I did follow DAZ since the days of Poser 4 I believe. Forums got wiped clean few years ago, so I don't even have the post number right :P

Got away from Poser, since I moved on 3d game development, and now I did check back the site and noticed that the old game license is gone, replaced by a "per item" license. Lots to digest, so I thought it is easier to just ask here to you folks :)

First: is still possible to get the game license for the old assets made from DAZ? I recall that there was a indie license to use any of the DAZ made assets in game engines like Unity. Or the new license is in place and you can't get the old one anymore? Just wondering if I have to license hundreds of assets or not.

Second: I did abandon poser mostly; and never did play much with DAZ studio, but now I would like to hop on. I am not even sure if I can use the old assets that I bought ages ago with it (like V3, V4, A3 and such); do they work out of the box or do I have to dig an old Poser copy and use that for the old assets?

Third: can I re-purpose the old assets for V3, V4, A3, A4, M3, M4 and such; on new figures? Got a ton of assets for these figures; and would be nice to be able to use them on a new figure. Poser used to have something called "wardrobe wizard" which would modify the assets so they would fit on many figures; although no poser no utility; plus it is ancient so I would not even think that it would work out of the box.

The idea here is to consider if I should use DAZ items for game development; both from the perspective of new items+license per item, and from the perspective of an old user that has a ton of unlicensed (for game usage) stuff, that would like to not throw it away :) I did try Morph3d; although it is too much of a hassle to deal with the limited assets available; plus they do not have anime figures; or toon figures; which reduce the creative freedom.

I can get assets for Unity or Unreal that are made for that purpose; so the aim here is to get something that looks nice, and at the same time does not take me too much time, to be imported in Unity or Unreal engine; keeping an eye on the costs of course.

Thanks in advance for any info you may give.

  • You can't get the old licenses anymore sadly. You could ask sales support if you want to try.

Yes, you can use old assets. DS still loads cr2s pz2s pp2s etc.

To use old clothing on new figures the figure will need to have a clone of the old figure the clothing was designed for. DS comes with something like Wardrobe Wizard built in. It's called AutoFit and it kicks in when you try to fit an item designed for another figure.

  • Thanks for the reply, agent :)

So as is now; I have to buy a license for every single piece of mesh I want to use in the game; and what about old content? I can't even see A3 or A4 for sale anymore. That is disappointing; I was actually part of the test team when the decimator and the first talks about convert DAZ to game asset store too, were made. Then I lost interest to be honest, since the process was so convoluted and the license was priced quite high. But considering that now I can spend more, it was a better solution, compared to buy a license for every single piece I may use.

Glad that I can still use old assets; although I bet they are not indexed for DS, so they won't show up in the nice tab with the smart content, right?

Awesome that DS integrate a utility that for poser, was sold as extra :) So I download A3, then the clothes I want to use on G3 for example, and then the whole thing should work when I try to fit the cloth item on? I will give it a try later and see the results. This really saves time and allow me to not throw away the 120+ GB of data I did save since 2004 :)

Also is it straight forward to export DAZ figures into Unity nowadays? years ago it was quite problematic

You'll need this to get the clone for Aiko 3: https://www.daz3d.com/wear-them-all-autofit-clones-expansion-for-genesis-3-male-s-and-genesis-3-female-s

DAZ has updated metadata for almost everything in the store now, so it should largely show up in Smart Content if reinstalled.

Aiko 3 and 4 are still in store. You can find them easily by looking in your product library and hitting the View Product Store Page link.

For DAZ Originals that have actually disappeared from the store, I suppose you would have to work something out with sales if you wanted to use them. For items from other artists that disappeared, you'd have to track them down.

  • Also, I've never tried to use a DAZ character in Unity yet, so I don't know how easy it is.

  • Oh, excellent!

I did try DS ages ago and it was quite a pain to use; but now I see a perfect integration with assets...I can download them directly in the app, which is awesome. I did use download manager in the past, which was great, but this is even better.

Search on the site, on the other hand, got quite worst; I get a wall of products when just typing "Aiko 3" and selecting  "Aiko 3" from the auto-completion :) But if I can go directly to the product page from DS, then it is a breeze.

For old content that has been removed, I guess I am OK just moving on; I did try once to contact a DAZ vendor; and neither DAZ helped me, nor the artist did anything to get in touch with his customer, so I save time and just avoid to use what is not available ;)

The search is frustrating.  I often  use Google to search the site; paste the search string below into Google and replace 'Aiko 3' with whatever you are searching for...
