Garibaldi vs. Look At My Hair - which is better overall/better for an amateur?

Since both Garibaldi Hair System and Look At My Hair are 46% off today as part of the hoopla surrounding the release of DS 4.6.0.18, I've pretty much decided to take the plunge and get one or the other of them so I can finally get some accurate hair styles for my historical renders. My question is (or rather, questions are, though they're related): 1) For those who have tried both, which one, in your opinions, do you think is better overall? 2) Which one of these is better/easier/lower learning curve for an amateur "hairstylist"? I don't know how long this sale will last so I'm planning to get one or the other today, so please let me know your opinions!

From what I've seen, both are great and different users have different preferences. There's a thread on the topic here: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/17345/

(For what it's worth, I use Look At My Hair and enjoy it. I don't own Garibaldi, but I've been impressed with what others have done with it...)

Also for what it's worth, there is a FREE Look at My Hair player in the store, and TONS of more free hair presets (load figure, load hair made for that figure, maybe change color or something, render) so you can see what it's kind of like :)

For me, I found LAMH a lot easier, and has a lot more simple user options than GB. But some folks prefer GB. Don't forget to look at http://www.furrythings.com/presets/ to see a huge and growing list of free hair presets for LAMH. Also note that in the store there are now items that come with LAMH presets!!!! I bet there's going to be a lot more of that in the future. :D IMO that's where it's at!

Hope to see you join the LAMH bandwagon :D

OK, I think I should be a bit more specific here. Which is better for *human* characters (I really don't work much if at all with animals and 'toons)? What I specifically want to do is create "Gibson Girl"-type hairstyles such as were prevalent in the 1890's and 1900's, classic piled-up hairstyles such as were worn in the Napoleonic/Regency era, and "movie star"/"pinup" hairstyles of the 1940's and 1950's (AprilYSH has several good ones of the last genre, of course). The fact is that, having read the above-quoted thread, there seems to be an indication that Garibaldi is better for human characters and LAMH for animal/toon characters. An issue with 3Delight was mentioned for Garibaldi, though that seems to be more of a problem with a particular script than with the base render engine (which is what I use). Also, LAMH is a bit more expensive with today's sale than Garibaldi. So it's still up in the air for me.

Hmm why people keep saying that I don't know....
I dont' really make animal hair. I've made one animal preset, EVER.

Did you not see all my hair pics in the LAMH threads? :P

hair, wings, and antennae made with LAMH:
    http://www.daz3d.com/forums/index.php?&ACT=50&fid=4&aid=68019_sFOUzo2b2tx3YsBxtKe0&board_id=1

and not human hair, but i made the fur and mane, and its one of my fav pics i've ever made:
    http://www.daz3d.com/forums/index.php?&ACT=50&fid=4&aid=61471_yuui1SJI1QyQz585nhvV&thumb=1&board_id=1

also not human hair, but besides the horse hair, tail and mane, the antlers were also made with lamh!
    http://www.daz3d.com/forums/index.php?&ACT=50&fid=4&aid=62300_QqDi0xRxMoSXhszC1uPA&board_id=1

And those are all just my work, others have made hair styles too. But as you can see, LAMH is quite good at hair styling. It's also very popular for making fur because its so easy and simple to do (and face it, animals in Daz have long long long been hard to use in pics because they looked like plastic instead of furry! we're all making up for lost time that's all) but I love making hair styles with LAMH.

So LAMH is DEFINITELY good at hair not just fur :D as well as making other things besides hair, such as clothing, wings, sphagetti, you name it. :)

And barbult, you can not restyle hair in the player, but you should be able to load all the presets n the player! :) If you want additional styling or creation power, you need the full plugin though.

I wish I could use LAMH, but for some reason (which I assume is caused by the fact my computer isn't exactly built for 3d art creating but rather bought for gaming/some photo/music etc and it's not tailorbuilt either) Lamh keeps crashing Daz when I tried to use the free version, and the few times it didn't crash I got some strnage result with only part of the hair showing.

But as I said, I assume that is because my computer probably can't handle Lamh, so perhaps one day I be able to look into that program again :)

I've looked at the list of LAMH presets, and there's one big problem; there's only one preset (Raven Hair) for Victoria 4 as opposed to a couple of dozen for Genesis. I do virtually all my work in Victoria 4, though, and expect to do so for some time to come. So that's a thing with me.

If you are using a machine with Intel Graphics, make sure that you have drivers newer than Dec 2012 installed.

The "only part of the hair showing" is probably that the hair counts (set in the Look at mt hair pane) are too low.

Feel free to ask questions, we're here to help

V4 needs some love, to be sure. LAMH supports her and all Gen4 figures just fine. We just need for folks to create a few presets for them.

*grumble* I wish I could make up my mind. What I really wish I could have is a couple of quick renders (with LAMH and Garibaldi) of the kind of hairstyle I want to create (i.e., late-Victorian/Edwardian "Gibson Girl" pompadour/hair roll) so that I could really get an idea of which would be better for what I want to do. :\

P.S. How long are the sales going to go on for? I don't want to miss out because I was dithering for too long.

I could do more for V4, i suppose. its just that a hair preset goes so much further on Genesis.. it may not fit all shapes perfectly but it can be used on most, usually! I personally use Genesis almost exclusively now (i've converted all of Gen 4 and Gen 3 morphs and characters and textures over, as well as all their clothes... ) so no reason to use them anymore, really for me :)

However I can work on a few more V4 presets in the future. Anything in particular you'd like, joea64?

edit: i googled gibson hair... wow what a hair challenge... how many hours did it take ladies to do their hair every day? and how many painful hairpins?? gosh!

Well as you saw my pictures earlier, i think I can do it, BUT it would probably, due to the amount of detail that would be needed for a hair of that complexity, be a fairly heavy load. But definitely doable.

you can test LAMH, not so for GB. I will say that i i watch the GB thread and havent' seen anything at the same levels of complexity for styles if you want to make things lilke Gibson hair, LAMH is probably the best route.

As I said, at the very top of my list is late-Victorian/Edwardian-era hairstyles, particularly the so-called "Gibson Girl" type. It looks like this (from, of course, a classic Charles Dana Gibson drawing):

    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fb/Gibson_Girls_seaside_-cropped-_by_Charles_Dana_Gibson.jpg

I've been looking literally ever since I started using Daz Studio for hairstyles of this type, and though I've had a number of suggestions, none of them has ever been really satisfactory/authentic-looking. The closest I've ever found is Biscuits' Vivian Hair, but that's a prop rather than a proper hairstyle set and has very limited morphs.

Following that, I'd like to have/create classic piled-up curly hairstyles of the type worn during the Napoleonic/Regency era, and then 40's/50's-style movie-star/model/pinup hairstyles.

Well, that's why I'm looking to buy either LAMH or Garibaldi - like I said in my OP, I've gotten tired of not being able to find any hairstyle that meets my needs/wants/picky specifications, so I'm now at the point of wanting to try making my own hair.

The classic "Gibson girl" style is my favorite, of course, but there were lots of other hairstyles during the 1890's and 1900's, right up to 1914, that would do as well, be as authentic and probably be easier/'simpler to make. If you've ever seen Downton Abbey or Mr. Selfridge, then you'll have a pretty good idea of what I'm going for (the latter is set in the early 1900's, the former - first season, specifically, during the 1912-1914 period, think "Titanic").

Next thing you know, you're staring dreamily at a stranger's hair at a bus stop, planning your steps to recreate it in LAMH....

I tell you I have a massive list of hair styles on my to-do list. Just not the time to make them all when I want to :)

    Try this site:

http://www.fashion-era.com/hair_hats_187099.htm (basic silhouettes of representative hairstyles from 1870 to 1900)

http://www.fashion-era.com/hats-hair/hats_hair_6_hairstyles_fashion_history_1900_1920.htm (hairstyles and hats from 1900 to 1920)

http://www.fashion-era.com/la_belle_epoque_1890-1914_fashion.htm (overview of fashion during the Belle Epoque

A couple of other issues which, I admit, will be a bit tricky to overcome are (1) that any hairstyles made with LAMH would need to be able to fit/be fit by hats - fortunately there are several good models of picture hats which are adaptable, and (2) for evening-dress renders, the hairstyles would need to be adorned by feathers, plumes and other such decorations (see the second link).

Neither am I, really. I wish there were something like these two programs for clothes. I have difficulty even manipulating basic shapes in Hexagon, let alone the kind of detail work that's necessary for clothing and props.

I decided to go with Taozen's suggestion, so I bought both LAMH and Garibaldi - on a trial basis, mind you! Whichever one I like better before the 30-day period runs out, I'll keep; the other goes back for a refund. So I'm going to put them both to the acid test and see how well they do on a Gibson-girl hairstyle.
