seleceting faces after extrusion

Hexagon 2.5.1.79

After extruding a face on a cube and then applying/validating the change, I'm not able to select a face on the extruded geometry. Instead the face of the cube from which the extrusion happened gets selected.  Should extrusion create new geometry with it's own faces. edges, points?

Collapse the Dynamic Geometry afterwards, or use Fast Extrude instead.
