3Delight question

How can you make 3delight characters more realistic looking?  I can't use Iray because I don't have the right graphics card .  Thanks in advanced.

...here is a link to a thread, which is full of tips and links for getting more out of 3DL. It can get a bit technical at times as well is over 80 pages in length, but there is good information within.

I'd say it's all about lightning and materials/shaders. My "to go" lightning is the AoA lights, Marshian's Reflective Radience lights and Parris IBL Master light shader. Also linear workflow seems to be crucial. Gamma Correction is turned off by default in 3DL, so be sure you have it enabled in the render settings pane and that gamma is set to 2.20!

Also if Velvet is set on the figure SHUT IT OFF.

Unless you are making vinyl figures.

  • Awesome thank you both I appreciate it.

@Oso3D where is the velvet setting at?

Type 'velvet' in the surface filter, that'll show it, if it's there. (Not all 3DL shaders have it)

The lights included with this character help make somewhat realistic 3Delight renders using Raiya's skins at portrait distance.

Very nice render, but I have that product and there are no lights included as far as I know. Now mentioning in the "what's included" list on the product page either.

Chablis lighting isn't in the light or light presets as one would expect. It can be found with your Chablis character.

BTW, I think lighting makes all the difference in how realistic something looks. This is true no matter your choice of render engine.

Ok, thanks! I had no idea:)

  • You said you can't render in Iray because you have the wrong graphics card. Have you tried rendering in CPU mode? Its slower but it gives the same results. The only requirement for Iray is that you are running a 64bit version of windows

...the one caveat is Iray can be painfully slow in CPU mode particularly if you have an older system like I do which is one reason I am moving back to 3DL for my primary illustration work.

Iray in cpu mode can be similar in render speed to 3dl.

Thank you so much everyone I'll take a look at that character I love the outcome.  @bradrg I have tried to render in CPU mode but my computer is painfully slow I try to render a single character with clothes and hair and it has taken 24 hours or longer to render with Iray.  I attached my system info.  Thank you everyone this is much appreciated.

  • @Oso3d I can't get it to be fast in Iray for some reason 3dl is much faster for me.  What could be wrong?

...if you are going for the most realistic results (as your OP implies), Iray will be slow in CPU mode.  The AMD A4 6300 has only two cores for rendering.  I have a 2.8  GHz (3.06 turbo) first generation i7 with 6 more processing threads and Iray takes hours when I set it for for the highest realistic output.

If you want realism, it’s going to be slow. If it’s not slow in 3dl, that’s probably because you are missing some of the things that make it more realistic.

  • Ok thank you both I appreciate your help.  @kyoto kit what kind of lighting do you use for characters in 3dl?

...AoA's Advanced Lights. there are three, an Ambient, Distant and Spot.  The spot light can also be turned into a point light and has lighting profiles similar to IES profiles for Iray lights.  I also recently picked up IBL Master which for 3DL provides improved indirect and bounce lighting compared to the AoA Ambient light and takes much less time to render than using UberEnvironment2:
