Need help understanding 'materials' with Gen 8 Evil Clown

Hello, I am brand new to the forums, and I have many questions regarding a particular model.  I bought the Genesis 8 Evil Clown model.I also bought a hair and outfit pack.  However, even though I bought the clown suit, it has no materials listed, not for the clown shows or suit, or even hair color, until I check to show everything.  Then, along with all the female materials, I have access to everything I bought.  However, no matter how many times I click, nor whichever one I click on, his hair, suit, shoes, everything but his flesh, is just a tan color.  I cannot understand how to use the materials on this clown.  Can someone please help me?

UPDATE:  I tried only making the clown suit (no clown) so the suit was just floating without anyone in it.  THEN the materials worked fine!  However, as soon as I put the clown back into the scene, the suit turns tan.  So I am still stuck >:(

You need to select the suit in the scene tab (that's the one in the top right corner of your screenshot) to make it show the materials in Smart content.

Also, if you want to apply materials to something, make sure you have selected that item in the scene tab. There are exceptions for certain items, like G7 centaurs, but as a rule of thumb, select what you want to work with.

Also, with some materials, it will not show certain details in the default view, as that doesn't properly understand Iray render settings. If you try a render, the material should show properly.

Good lord, thank you!  This is what I was missing.
