Renaming Items In Scene Tab

OK, this is driving me nuts. Sometimes I need to rename items once they are loaded into the scene. I KNOW I can do so in the scene tab, as it sometimes (and annoyingly) accidentally gives me that option when I am clicking on a particular item. But I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do it consistently (and on purpose). What is the secret to doing this? Where do you click? How do you click? PLEASE HELP BEFORE I SMASH MY COMPUTER! :)

Double-click on the name of the item in the Scene tab

Single click and hold the button down until the word appears highlighted and a cursor appears.

Thanks! Wow, that was a total mystery to me. Not the most elegant way to do it - why not a right-click or something? Oh well....

BTW, SickleYield - I use several of your products. All very nice. Thanks!

Unfortunately not. Based on my experimenting with SickleYield's response, you have to highlight the item, then click on it and hold down the mouse button for a mysterious amount of time, then let go and hope that you can rename the item.

Yes, I stand corrected, for me highlight and then single-click works

Might be too much to hope for such a small thing, but it would be nice to see something a little more intuitive in future versions. The fact that I had to ask here in the forum is a sign that maybe the current method is kinda weird.

I know,, it often caused trouble me before as same as you feel.
I click and clikc and click, with anger ^^; or click only icon etc.
untill understsand to wait few seconds,, ds prepare to edit name.

    then as for me,,
I select node as first as I can. it turn orange .
    wait a one seconds,
then click node as first as I can. not hold down. (may need not holding I think.)
    wait DS prepare it.

We may need option menu , when we right click then select root node,
which can change label name of current select node in scene tab.
it is naturall and usuall I think.

I know there is menu Edit>scene Identification.

but we need only change labell name not actuall bone name as usuall.
and not need so difiicult name menu,,, identification etc,,

    just "change labell name":P

It's the same method as renaming files, in Windows explorer at least. Though putting in a feature request to add it to the right-click menu is perfectly reasonable (make a bug report and set the Severity to Feature).
