Difference between SSS in 4.5 and 4.6 ?

edited December 1969 in Daz Studio Discussion

I'm confused by all the fuzz about the new sub surface shaders, isn't 4.5 already capable of SSS ? if so what is the difference between 4.5 SSS and 4.6 SSS ?

I have Interjection by DimensionTheory and that seems to work, although it has a big performance hit in my case. Are the new sub surface shaders by Age of Armour faster or better in this regard ?

Will these new sub surface shaders work with 4.5 ?

Thanks.

Yes they work in 4.5. The AoA shader is perhaps the most complex network available made in Shader Mixer, so it's hard to replicate it, but unless they changed the SSS brick (which is the core of the shader) it should behave identically in 4.5 and 4.6.

Yes! :) You could even apply the shader in 4.5 then, still with the Surface selected, go in Shader Mixer, and File->Import from Scene..., then, still in Shader Mixer, do a File->Save Shader... After that you can apply the material in pretty much anything from DS 3 to DS 4.0 (Open Shader Mixer and do File->Load Shader..., point to your saved dbm and click the green Apply button in Shader Mixer; remember to select the surfaces to apply it to beforehand). Note that DS3 doesn't support saved scenes with the SSS brick, I forget if it crashes during save or load, but you can still apply the shader and render.
