SY's Smoke and Fast Fog Iray

Hi,

I've purchased many of Sickleyield's product line from Fire, water, whips, rope, confetti, etc.  Then I bought the smoke and fast fog Iray.  Loaded the smoke planes into my scene.  In the Texture Shaded mode, the smoke worked like a vapor should, perfect dispersion!  I couldn't ask for a better result.  But when I turn on Iray mode or do a full Iray Render, the smoke/fog becomes hard like plaster.  Even a spot light bounces off of it.  I tried decreasing opacity and still it looks like a cutout cardboard.  In the attachment, it's the white mass in front.  It's not the product, it's me.  I'm probably missing something so basic that I'm embarassed to ask.  Can anyone suggest a solution?

Thanks in advance

Hmm...yeah that's a bit odd. I have the set and I just did some test renders to see if there was something going on, like a file missing or something, but they all render fine for me in Iray.

So, I'm going to go out on a limb here and start spit-balling.

First, have you had DS up and running for a while? Sometimes (at least my copy) if I've had the program open for some time, it starts to act wonky, like dropping textures, or taking longer and longer to render. (There are others, but these are my top two problems.) I'll save my file, close DS, reopen it and load the file. It'll render perfect then.

If this is not the case for you, then the next thing I would do is look at the surface tab and make sure that the cutout opacity files are loaded correctly.

And finally, do you get any kind of error when you're running the render? Sometimes if a texture isn't loading correctly (very much in my first scenario - this happens more than I care to think about), it'll show up in the log. The log will tell you what the culprit is.

Let me know if anything of this makes sense or helps. I'll continue to run down ideas until we find you an answer. :)

Ditto. I get these and lots more glitches.

  • You know, for all of my presumed sophistication about tech, I know squat.  There're lemmings in them thar machines.  I've had this fog/smoke problem for months and was at my wit's end.  Couldn't find a solution for my life.  The moment I give up and go public asking for help, the ghost in the machine behaved.  I DID NOTHING to change the settings, reran the tests again this morning and behold below.  All honkeydorry.  It's as if they waited until I'm at max pain then gave me my wish.  Thanks FeralFey.  I couldn't reproduce the error (oh, DS did crash again when I ran the test) but everything seems to work by power of suggestion.   Oh, you bugger in the machine, be kind.

Hey, glad it started working, anyhow. :)  Feralfey's suggestions are still good ones if it happens again.
