Help with shadow settings

I've just started (finally) to try and learn how to use Studio (even though its been on my computer for about a year) and am running into many quandries that the tutorials don't seem to address.  The first is the shadow settings on lights (which was hard enough to find since it was "hidden").  I've tried softening the shadows to make their edges not so severe, but nothing seems to happen.  I'm wondering if it has to do with the fact that the settings themselves don't seem to be "illuminated" as other working setings are (see the picture).  Why are they dark and others are lighter?

  • The properties were hidden because you are using Iray and they don't work in Iray.

  • Well... that's something not mentioned in any tutorial I've seen to date.

    Thanks!

It isn't mentioned because the way to soften shadows in Iray is to adjust the light the same as you would use a dimmer switch in the house.

  • That may soften the shadow, but does nothing for the edge.  is there any way to make a more diffuse shadow in Iray?

  • To soften the shadows cast by a light you need to give it area, which can be doen with the settings under Light>Area in the Parameters pane.

Yeah, if you turn the light from point to the various geomety options, then make the size bigger, it acts more like a softbox the bigger you make it.

  • I'll give that a try.  Thanks!
