Surface Editor - Opacity Alpha Map

I am trying to add an alpha map to carve a section out of a segment of clothing with a procedural texture on it.

I have created the alpha map and placed it in the Surfaces Editor in both the Opacity Color & Opacity Strength LIE (Layered Image Editor) windows.

I have tried the UV Map Tiling at both 1 and to the preset setting of 4.

UV tiling set to 1: I can place the map but it seems to blur the procedural texture on the rest of the selected surface.

UV Tiling set to 4: The procedural texture stays sharp but it is very difficult to place & shape the map where I need it.

Is there a best practices method of placing an alpha map through the Surfaces Editor or am I going about it wrongly?

I kind of think this might be something better handled through the Shader Mixer but I am not really familiar with how to do it that way.

Any thoughts on this would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

First off, remove the map from the Opacity Color. It's not needed there. Secondly, the results are going to be dependent on the UV's. If there is tiling being used, it will also tile the opacity map so you need to take that into consideration when working with it.
