I am wanting to add "cutouts" into my scenes to save resources on my old PC.

Can this be done in DS 3 Advanced?

Have many cutouts to hand but although they come in with plain white backgrounds and chequred which would suggest they are transparent.
when rendered they display the plane itself....?

In Photoshop i imported one of these cutouts then saved as a png with alpha background....same result.

Has any one imported cutouts that could shed some light on what i may be doing wrong?

Thanks for your time.

If you images have a transparent background in Photoshop do File>Save as to make a copy, adding something like T or Trans to the end of the name as it will be a transparency map. Now ctrl(Win)/cmd(Mac)-click on the layer thumbnail in the PS Layers pane, which should load the opacity as a selection, then set you foreground/background colours to the default black and white (press the D key or click the little black and white squares above the current colour swatches in the toolbox. Hold down Ctrl(Win)/Cmd(Mac) and press the Backspace key to fill the opaque areas with white. Now press ctrl(Win)/cmd(Mac+shift+i to invert the selection, and press alt(Win)/opt(Mac)-backspace to fill with black -you should now have an image which is white wheer you want your cut-out visible and black where it should be hidden - save that.

In DS, in the Surfaces pane, apply your original image to the Diffuse colour and the new black-and-white image to the Opacity Strength. Your cut-out should now render correctly.
