Never thought I'd be asking for this, but I have cat people in my webcomic (Melody 2.0) and their
fan club wants fursuits!
Like Furrys wear at cons.

Have you got any of these fur shaders? At least one of them may do what you want.

I will note that I developed Oso Fur Shaders after struggling with fibermesh; I was considering making a fibermesh based fursuit just like you describe, but WOW. You end up with a huge object that's difficult to manage.

To do it mostly right requires millions of hairs, which means multiple millions of polygons. I attempted to use some tricks to cut down on the polygons, but they ended up looking... bad.

Maybe someone else will do a better job of it.
