What program do I need to use to edit DAZ '.duf' content?

I'd like to edit my own Victoria 6 character and create some of my own fixtures that will work in DAZ studio.. What program would you recommend I use that will allow me to graphically alter '.duf' format easily?

DUF is a text based format, so any text editor will do to edit it.

Knowing what to edit is another story.

What is it that you want to do exactly, there may be a way to do what you want inside DAZ Studio, and then save in DUF format.

By default .duf files are compressed - they can be unpacked with the Batch Convert pane in DS, or with an archive tool such as 7Zip.

I already said, "I’d like to edit my own Victoria 6 character and create some of my own fixtures that will work in DAZ studio."

It might be '.dsf' files that I want to edit.. basically whatever GRAPHIC files it is that DAZ3d Uses. I've asked about merchant resource programs for making my own character.

I understand what you want to do (I think), but editing DUF or DSF files is not the way to go about it.

What do you want to do to V6? If you want to change the shape of her face or body, you would not do that by editing a file, you would do it by applying morphs within DS, and saving the result as a Character Preset or even as a Scene or Scene Subset, sepending on the reault that you want, and how you want to use it.

What do you mean by 'fixtures'?
Do you mean 'props', like a hat or jewellery or sword or some other object that V6 can use? If so, you would need to create the object in a 3D modelling program, then import it into DAZ Studio in OBJ format, and create a prop that way. You cannot do this by editing files.

If you mean textures, those are generally in jpg format - in \Runtime\Textures\Some folder - but DS supports Tiff, PNG and BMP too (Tiff is used for 16 bit displacement maps). The .duf file is settings - which textures and parameter values to apply - saved from the Surfaces pane, so you edit it by applying it and editing the settings, or setting the materials up from scratch, then going to File>Save as>Materials preset.

The goal is to make the skin texture more realistic and I'm convinced the only way that is going to happen is if I go and figure out how to edit the skin layers myself.

It would be nice if DAZ3D provided a 'merchant resource' of templates specifically for V6. I plan on making my own character skins and I happen to know some well known models that are interested in being immortalized by being digitized.

You know what they say, "If you want something done right, do it yourself."

Shaping isn't an issue.. I have the Zev0 shape package and thats brilliant.... If you haven't bought it.. do so.. it's a brilliant product. I just need a good realistic (by my own standards) skin to work with.

All you need is the V5, V6 or V whatever Texture template and ANY of the for sale Merchant Texture resource kits. Then you can do this thing you wish to do. Then you edit them and ADD these textures you know you can get... That is were we get the textures we have now. People make them.

You need a UVmap, a photo editor, and a lot of skill. UVmaps are easy to get, the old tried and true http://www.uvmapper.com/ works easy and is quite easy to learn. As far as a photo editor there are quite a few to chose. Photo shop is at the top of most peoples list but, for free there is always Gimp. Which I don't care for, or my favorite photofilter http://photofiltre.free.fr/

For skin resources there is always http://www.3d.sk/

But I can't help with the talent part ;-)

SnowSultan has made seam guides for most of the Genesis 1 characters and for the Genesis 2 female base already http://www.snowsultan.com/3.html

Now your talking... When you stop trying to over complicate the idea of simply stretching a models skin inside of a pattern to rap around a model, you move in the right direction... I agree that some of the best textures DAZ ever did was the "Elite" series... Where they went wrong was in choosing plain looking ladies instead of porn stars.

I agree with one of the other people that posted that it takes a LOT of talent to make a damn good skin... Not a lot of people can do it and I'm not assume mine is going to come out any better... But I think we should all at least give it a go and see whose comes out the best!! LOL

So... How about somebody give there best tips for beginners on "How to create a brilliant looking characters for V6f for idiots".

You guys have to love those shaping abilities... I sure do.. Make sure you pick up Zev0's morph package.

    Peace
