People with more available time than available smarts. (Includes the audiences).
Boy, do I hate 'reality' TV.
Generally I hate tv
I'm no fan of reality TV, I'm no fan of stupid shows, I'm no fan Soap Operas, I'm no fan of talk TV , I'm no fan of Sexy crap just to pull you in, I'm no fan of blood and gore just to pull you in, I'm no fan of what they have done to all the myths I grew up with, vampires that walk in day light, give me a break. Which leaves me with about 4 channels to watch out of the 200+ I have. Discovery, Natural Geo, Science and Hallmark for the old Good movies. Now here's the Stupid part...
I pay Big money every month to have all that stuff I choose to not watch. If I didn't I could not get the ones I do watch...
EDIT: Guess that one makes me the Stupid one and the folks at the Cable Company the smart ones...
I hear you, Jaderail - I'm in the same boat, with pretty much the same channel list. I get TCM as one of mine, and I've been enjoying movies from the 30s and 40s on it. Which leaves me paying just south of $100 a month for five or six movies and the local news, for the most part.
I'm still waiting for the so-called 'V' chip the politicians promised us - the one that would 'let us block objectionable content'. I want to block non-attorney spokesperson ads for ambulance-chasing lawyers, action/adventure shows with gratuitous chase scenes that do not add to the plot, any show with more than 4 minutes of contiguous commercials, and infomercials for products not sold in stores - for starters.
Crud. It's getting late; I think I'll knock some popcorn together and go watch the recording I made of Die 3-Groschen-Oper. Better than anything else on tonight.
If you block the objectionable programs there will only be stuff from the '30's, '40's,'50's and '60's.
I unplugged my TV to use the extension cord for something else a few months ago and never plugged it back in.
I hadn't turned it on much before that the last couple of years. I don't miss it.
I miss the test patterns
Wait, you mean there aren't going to be racism, sexism and religious discrimination filters?
Wait, you mean there aren't going to be racism, sexism and religious discrimination filters?
You find those things objectionable? Odd...
My point.
For the record, I've recently watched the Bogart festival on TCM and the recent Myhbusters "season" on Discovery (and that's another complaint - I remember when there was a 39-episode winter season and a 13 episode summer season -- and I REALLY miss the old variety shows- Ed Sullivan, Gary Moore, Carol Burnett, Jackie Gleason and similar - and the Hallmark music shows that ran as the summer filler).
And I'm watching Peter Gunn, La Femme Nikita, Maverick, and old Hitchcock movies on DVD while I wait for the only other cable series I enjoy to air the last six episodes - Warehouse 13.
Add a couple of cooking shows, local news, and the occasional VH1 'Behind the Music' and that's pretty much the viewing list. (No, I don't do sports - any kind - not interested).
You find those things objectionable? Odd...
...I actually feel fortunate my telly blew up years ago. Don't really miss it these days, I save a lot of money, and I get more important stuff done.
Save for TNT, Oxygen (where I could get my Xena fix), BBC America, as well as ESPN and Fox Sports in the fall (for the NFL and college football), don't really miss it. Even old favourites of mine like like the History Channel and Discovery have gone way down hill with more sensationalistic rather than factual programming.
I thought it might be cool to get a Stupid Filter, but then I fear all I'd get are get nothing but black screens with a "blocked" message.
...guess what? It's Catruday so time for some appropriate stupidity brought to you by the folks at BBC.
