DSA? DS3A? DS4?

mat files from DS3 to DS4 are dsa format right?
4.5 has no way to make dsa files.
So I tried to install Daz 3A. In a separate location from DS4.6
I pointed the DS3A to the same content runtime directory that DS4.6 uses. (the content is on a different drive- programs are on C drive, content on D drive)
However, when I try to load M4 or V4 in DS3, I get this error:
PowerLoader - critical Error
X - this script is not intended to be run standalone. It is intended to be run as a result of loading an ExP enabled "Michael 4" based figure from the Content tab. Rename this file to match the name of the intended cr2 to continue.
Most of the figures won't even SHOW UP in Ds3A...
What did I do wrong?? T_T
help!

What loads with what version of DS is possibly less important that what figure it is aimed at.
MAT poses loaded with .pz2, .ds, and .dsa, should load and apply in any version of DS
Those that are .dsb or .dse will load in any version which is at least as high as the one they were created in (so if created in 4.0 will not load in 3, etc.)
File type of .dsf came with DS4 (I think), so will load in any version higher than that.
The .duf format rolled out with 4.5 (again, I think) so will work on 4.5 or higher.
Where it gets a bit complicated is with the G2F figure (and derivatives such as V6) which will ONLY accept MATs applied via .duf file.
Creating them should be done via the Save As> Deprecated menu option, which provides the ability to create .ds? files.
So if i make material settings in DS4.6, using older shaders like HSS that worked in 3.0, for a figure such as A3 or A4, and saved as deprecated, it would work in Ds3+??
I wish i could test this, but I can't get DS3 working on my darn machine :(
As far as I am aware no it won't work in DS3 anyway. I am pretty sure I tried it a while back. After my evening meal I will test it again.
I cant recall if this is in 4.5 as well as 4.6 but you should be able to save as > depreciated asset and choose .dsa format. I only tested once but it worked fine in DS3A using this method. Granted the shader setup I used was not super complicated so not sure how much that carrys over with working seamlessly.
Edit: Doh just saw was said already lol
hope someone can test this for me! i have no idea why my install of DS3 isn't working right :(
I was wrong it works.
I loaded a cube applied a lace fabric preset in DS4.6 to the cube, saved the Material Preset as a depreciated Mat .dsa preset and it loaded no problem in DS3A on to a cube and spehere.
awesome!!!! Thank you SOOOOOOOO much Szark!!! You're awesome :D
My pleasure. I also tried some different mat presets, like Shader Mixer duf's as some Supersuit mat presets and they all worked in DS3A. I even test rendered them to see if they did actaully work. Now it is time for tea.
Thanks Szark! you saved me a lot of tears over trying to install DS3 again.... or 4..... Appreciate it !!
I have no idea why you are having issues with DS3 as I have one set of content folders on a separte hard drive for DS2, DS3A, DS4.6 and Poser 8 and everything works.
I'm totally baffled too...before this computer, I had both set up on a single computer too and it worked FINE. But it's definitely not working now :(
I can confirm as well that the DSA files made in DS4.6 work in DS3
DS3A doesn't use CMS or the Smart Content stuff (from memory)... have you installed everything for your figures, and set up the "Native format" as well as the "Poser format" directories under Edit -> Preferences -> Directories tab?
(like you, I also installed DS4.6 first... then went and installed DS3A to do some testing... but I'm using separate runtimes and have reinstalled the base figures into that second (DS3) runtime (then run the "Update V4 Base" / "Update M4 Base" batch files etc with no problems). Plus reinstalled shaders also - which write magic stuff into the local DS3 "support/" directory. Consequently, I can't really help with a setup which uses a _shared_ runtime - sorry <(^_^)).</p>
The error message sounds like you should probably reinstall M4, selecting the DS3 option (if you didn't do that already). Safest would be to start a second runtime for the base characters, purely for DS3... you should be able to load clothing/props etc from the 4.6 one though. ymmv of course v(^_^)v.
Make sure the content folders you have listed in DS4 are listed in DS3, both in DS-format and Poser-format.
