Broken or Stretched Clothing when Character Moves

OK. This is probably a stupid question. I've been using Daz for about a year and a half now (and Carrara for about 8 months) and I can create stuff I really like.

But.

Sometimes I'll put clothing on a character and when the character moves, the clothing gets all weirded out and either gets weird stretchy parts where the polygons look messed up or it gets even weirder and the polygons look like they're torn or something.

What do I need to look at to figure out how to fix it? Weight Maps? Rigging? Something else? I have a feeling there's something easy I need to do (or learn to do) but I'm not sure what it is.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about. This is The Songstress on a Genesis figure who isn't making any sort of extreme movement, but it's messing up the bottom of the dress. I'm attaching the big picture and then a zoom in on the broken part.

AutoFit is not kind to skirts and skirt-like things, it treats them more like trousers with a sharp fall off in the weight map. What you can do that often works is to use the Polygon Group Editor to select a line of polygons down the middle of the skirt, grow the selection a bit (cmd(Mac)/ctrl(Win)+) (or just seelct a block by painting on the mesh - I prefer to grow the selection as it fills in any awkward to reach polygons), then switch to the Weight Painting tool, select the bend maps for the thigh groups, right-click and select Smooth Selected Faces. Though in this case using the V4 source figure from the improved mapping set and the knee length dress gives better results than you seem to be getting..

    Thanks, Richard!

    smh

Smart, my middle name is not.

Very quick, very easy fix. When I was going through the auto-fit, I was leaving the type of garment blank. To me, this didn't qualify as a knee-length dress because... well... it's not a knee-length dress. I deleted the dress and then brought another one in and fitted it to the figure with the knee-length dress option selected and... voila! Perfect.

    Thanks, again!

lately I have been autofitting dresses to the Genesis MFD and others with handles
or using the transfer utility to create a new asset.
for studio animation I cannot help (no track modifier!) but in Carrara I add two target helpers parented to my character's thighs and get the skirt handles to track them.
I can still move and adjust them along the timeline as needed for sitting etc to avoid pokethrough etc unlike a weightpainted to figure skirt..
since you use Carrara too I will mention this even though we are in the in studio forum.

    Thank you.

I'll have to play with that.
