Handgun variety!

I've noticed a very strange trend with G8 products, as I've been regularly browsing the new releases for a long time now.

Beretta M9. It's a very common pistol in American media, as it is used by military and is readily available all over the country. It has a very nice form and look to it, and thus gets used in games and movies alot. Here in Daz, specifically for the G8 releases, this 1 specific gun has been remade 3 times. Even more if you go back and look through G3.

Next, the Colt 1911. Basically the same story as the M9, just at an early point in history. This one has been remade 4 times for G8. And again, even more if you go back to G3.

Now, as someone who has attempted to learn modeling and such, I can obviously respect the effort and detail put into these products, but, I just wish that the next time someone came out with a "Gun and poses" set, that they could make a different gun. There's literally hundreds if you just walk into any American gun shop, or look up any FPS game. There is zero shortage of cool and eye-grabbing designs. I'm not going to sit here and make a christmas list, but, I'd like to start seeing some revolvers (Both hunting and old west styles), some compact pocket pistols, or even just more unique looking ones.

You must be an enthusiast; the average person couldn't pick a Sig-Sauer out of a pile of handguns. wink

None of these are smart props, but they're good models that fit if you take the time to pose manually.

Agreed. The biggest problem I see is many users don't want to take the time to pose a gun in the hands of their figure. They want it done for them, which I agree is convienant but it severly limits their choices, There are many, many guns on the web at various free sites and once you pose it you can save the pose for later. So a user can wait till a PA creates a gun package they want, or they can use what they find and the tools they have in DS.

I am a gamer and have a ton of weapons extracted from the games i own and they work great in DS.

That could be the sound of opportunity knocking on your door. Guns are a pretty decent way to learn modeling and rigging (small parts with simple movements) I don't know if there's a market for it, but you never know. Personally, I've done the military thing and I'm sick of looking at guns, grenades, claymores, anything that goes boom.

As far as the market goes, I wouldn't think there'd be a market for poses because posing is so simple, but there is, so you never know.

If you're looking for a revolver, there's a Magnum .44 included in Omega Huntress X, part of the V4 Toughness Bundle which is currently a freebie. I don't know whether it's any good as a model (at the very least, you'll have to rework the surfaces for Iray), but you can't fault the price!

Oh nice!! Thanks, though I’m so spoiled by incredibly cheap Daz pricing

Nice, but for that extra touch of what-the-heck-is-it-ness, there's not much to beat the Webley-Fosbery Automatic Revolver. A nutty idea, I know, but at one point it stood a halfway-decent chance of being chosen as the standard pistol for the British Army during WW1.

While we're on the subject, I keep trying to find a nice period flintlock pistol, with all the moving bits present. There are "flintlocks" in the store, many of them as part of a pirate outfit, but way too many of them are either non-moving props, or they have bits not modelled — no flint in the hammer, no spring, no steel to strike sparks, no priming pan or touchhole... they're sort of an artist's impression of what a flintlock ought to look like. A pity, because the large moving parts have a lot of potential in animation. Suggestions, anyone?

I wish the lettering in the image wasn't where it is.
But it looks as if the barrel is lined up with the center of the cylinder.
Not good. Time for Geometry Editor and a light touch of Everyday Morphing Primitives.

  • 100% with you on his one! Strangely enough, there is no lack of really good looking handguns, it would be a great playing field for creative artists. Unfortunately, you only see the same articles here over and over again. There seems to be nothing but Beretta and Colt.

By the way, in the area of assault rifles it is not much better! The coolest designs for assault rifles haven't made it into DAZ3D in years!

There are a number of fantasy and sci-fi handguns and rifles, tho.  I.e. we have stuff like this set of Steampunk handguns that I bought awhile back.  Then again, there's this pair of flintlock guns that I also picked up a couple days ago.  But clearly these aren't the sort of ones you're looking for.  On the other hand, stuff like those are understandable, since it is easier for merchants to create made-up gun designs than it is to try to recreate a real-life firearm, particularly if they figure the actual gun maker might come after them for daring to make a replica of theirs without paying them a license or something.  oO

Licensing of weapon likenesses is a thing. Which is why you'll find games have weapons that all but look identical to their real-world counterparts, save a couple of minor and largely unnoticable changes and are called something made up. Firearms manufacturers wansta get paid, one way or another.
