Render-time & "Extra-renderframe" scene content

A quick question: Is render time effected by elements of a scene that reside outside of the frame capturing the render? In other words, if I have a 16:9 rectangular frame surrounding the scene content I wish to render, do elements beyond the rendering confines of that frame "bog down" the speed by which the render is completed?

Yes, they do. All loaded items will get Lighting and Shadow Calculations at Render time. You can use the Scene Tab EYE to turn off parts that will not Reflect on items or cast shadows and Save Time and Ram both.
Excellent. Thanks.
I used the eye to make invisible elements not needed for the render, but the render time remained the same. With my other post in mind that you responded to (the one regarding saving characters as scenes), would the merging of multiple scenes effect that, even if they are simply single characters saved as scenes?
No, but other factors like the lighting used, the number of Transmaps (hair and trees), shaders, camera settings and render settings all come into play. An example is the use of the Atmospheric Cameras. They always take about the same amount of time on a large scene no matter what, as the render engine must add the effect as it goes. Transmaps on hair, trees, grass and other props also always render much longer. Reflections and things like Depth of Field on a camera all add time. Uber Environment Lights always add time. It could very well be you just have what is know as a Heavy render. Not much will help for those.
Okay - thanks for the reply.
