Sharp edges smooth geometry

I’ve been running here there and everywhere looking for a tutorial I saw once but to no avail, so I’m turning to the Hex gurus here on the forums.
Now, I am fairly sure there is a way to use the smoothing tool to create extra geometry to create nice smooth curves, while at the same time keeping nice sharp edges. Am I correct? If correct, how do I keep those outside edges nice and sharp. I’m including example image in case my descriptions of the problem are falling short.
I'm looking to smooth the faces between the outside edges, which need to remain sharp.

Ciao.
Sorry.....
Applying the smoothing tool is not the issue, but thanks for responding. The problem is keeping the edges at the ends sharp. I remember watching a tutorial and something about folding edges was mentioned. I don't remember what tool was used, or what the process was.
Sorry.
Non capisco.
Sorry.

That's the one. Many thanks ;) Oh, and I see what you meant by your first images too. That icon doesn't always show, and I'm not sure why yet.
It appears when you have uncollapsed geometry (look in the lower right corner at his "dynamic geometry" box).
I see. So it has to be applied at the same time as the smoothing mod. Thanks
