I have been looking at characters on sale for G1 and G2.
The descriprion sometimes states it is for a specefic item , such as V6, but sometimes it also states on that same page the item can be used with genesis femals, with no specefic item like V6 or V5 mentioned.

An example is NautiCallie, for S5, but the "Compatible 3D Figures" down the page simply states "Genesis."

So can such a character be used with the the built in genesis figure that comes with DS 4.6?

Thanks.

To look exactly like the image in that link you need S5, as some morphs from her were used to create the character. The textures are useable on Genesis no matter what and some morphs will work, just not all of them as you would be missing S5.

    Hope I didn't confuse you.

Yes, that's how they're built. Genesis (and G2F for V6 etc.) is the base figure for every Generation 5 figure. If something like a clothes set says it's specifically for, say, S5 then it'll be set up so it will fit S5 — but it will also fit the unmorphed Genesis and automatically fit any other Genesis figure, although the fit here might not be as good as it is on S5.

There is one pretty serious hiccup, though: a character for S5 will probably (although it doesn't have to) use the S5 UVMap which defines how the skin texture fits on the Genesis figure. The only way to get the S5 UV set onto Genesis is to buy the base S5 figure. Applying a character you don't have the UV set for can lead to amusing consequences like Frankenstein seams, or the lips texture disappearing half-way up the nostrils.

...I remember when people questioned why the YT5s used the V4 UV instead of the Genesis or V5 one. I actually found that a blessing as I could use any of my Gen4 female (save for K4) character maps, since all were built on the base V4 unimesh, which gave me a wide variety of character skins to use.

You could still use V4 UV on any Genesis1 morph, including YT's, regardless of what UV their default texture uses. You can use K4 skins, too.

    Thanks, Kitty.

That is a valuable lesson in itself.

...but the K4 skins don't work as there was no K4 clone.

I use the K4 skins on Genesis a lot, I think the clone came with the base.

UVmaps don't require clones, the clones are only for autofit.
