RWBY - popular web anime made with Poser (update Season 2)
I'm guessing at least a few of you of us here have seen this. The first episode has over 1.3 million views and they're up to episode 11... I think. It's impressive to see what can be done with programs like DS and Poser when skilled professionals get their hands on them and actually give them a chance. The show’s creator and lead animator, Monty Oum is undoubtedly an animator pro who knows his way around Poser.
I've done a writeup about the show here, recounting a short history of the publisher (Rooster Teeth), and their flagship IP, Red VS Blue, which began life as a Machinima made with Halo game engines but later switched to Poser for season 8 (strangely about when Oum started there), and beyond.
I'm not aware of any other similar projects done with Poser or DAZ Studio. Anyone know of any? I would love to see more high quality animation series.

Although it isn't smooth in all parts, it looked awesome and I liked the anti-hero's XD
If this is the start of affordable animation, things are looking good for the future!
Oh yeah, there are definitely some imperfections, like how the characters sometimes phase through things like bushes, and there might be some clipping with the hair, but overall it is a very good quality animation for a relatively low budget production.
Thanks jimzombie for link.
I love in extreme RWBY, I see all episodes, one and another time. I would like to see animations like this made in DS4.6.
Glad you like the show. I haven't really tried my hand at character animation, but from what I've read Poser has the edge. That's not to say it wouldn't be possible, so yeah I agree, it would be great to see stuff like this done with DS.
Thank you for pointing out this series. I would have never thought something like this is really possible with Poser.
No worries Proxima ;) Ep 10 is out too http://roosterteeth.com/archive/?id=8109
Season one has just come to an end. Was really great seeing one of our dirty "hobbyist" programs creating work like this - really inspiring stuff, even if you aren't an anime fan. I've been really wanting to see some detailed behind the scenes stuff, but there just doesn't seem to be anything out there. Apparently there is a little on the DVD, so I look forward to seeing that.
More coming soon...ish I guess - no official work. I put together a a short post about it all. Still looking for other interesting DS/Poser powered productions.

Indeed.
Software used: Poser Pro, Maya, ZBrush, Softimage, 3ds Max, After Effects, Premiere, Photoshop, particleIllusion.OptiTrack’s Arena software.
Yes, but Poser is an important piece in it.
Thinking in DAZ Studio, Genesis would be the optimal tool for characters.
I saw the DVD & Blue-Ray of it yesterday at Walmart . The Blue-Ray case is all black
Yes, true, not ALL of the work is done with Poser. The fact that assets were made with Maya is not intimidating though. You just can't make model in Poser, so you got to work with something there (or use stock content). Maya may be a fine expensive piece of software, but those assets could as easily be built with something else. Not sure how much after effects is in there. I know a lot of the explosions and such are animated cards (which are then bought into Poser) made with some effects plugin or standalone program that eludes me right now. All this is true, but essentially this is a Poser production.
I'm also not sure how much is straight mocap either, from what I read there tends to be so much tweaking that it might as well be keyframed. When it comes down to it there really isn't much there that can't be done with inexpensive software.
Edit: particleillusion was the software I was looking for - thanks to none01ohone for pointing that one out. Great relatively cheap piece of software.

And Caboose is the funnies character of Red vs Blue, I have seen every season, thanks to my son. It was because of Red vs Blue that I knew about RWBY and loved it as well.
Poser too. Premier used to improve animation

Thanks gilikshe, this is so cool and cheesy! There was some really well produced moments there, but particularly in the following part 2 and 3. Good camera work and use of DOF. I'm subscribed to ghidghid now. I like his (it is a he, right?) little how to/demonstration videos and the way he works in a bit of a chuckle. I think it's great how he shows how pure stock content productions can still be interesting. Seeing a basic Michael 4 always makes me laugh though. For anyone that has any link to 3D probably knows him too well. It's like seeing some B-list movie star pop up in all these movies you just rented.
I'd actually seen Sexy Dino Hunter before. Thanks for sharing :)
Another tech panel here Melbourne, Australia this time. Some good info about 35 mins in.
Thoughts and brief summary at DigiSprawl, as usual http://www.digisprawl.com/blog/news/rooster-teethrwby-animation-pannel
The inspiration to pull from this? Everyone knows that to be considered "serious" and "professional" when doing work at this level, the software you use have to have "Pro" in the title or somewhere in the pipeline, the "Industry Heavyweights" need to exist (i.e. Maya, 3DS Max, Zbrush etc). After seeing this first episode, I'm going to challenge myself to do something to this level with these...Daz Studio, Poser, Vue, Hexagon, iClone. I have Photoshop, Premiere, and After Effects, but I also on HitFilm Standard. I believe this same level of animation can be achieved in these products if one is willing to put in the work. I'm tired of feeling that it can't be and waiting for someone to prove me wrong by doing so. Then I said to myself...why don't I prove myself wrong?
The Anime influence in RWBY is undeniable...and I love that aspect. I also love that they used Poser Pro to do rigging and texturing. But they also used the heavy duty apps as well.
We in this community should be tired of seeing the programs we have come to love and use (and can only afford) not being used to their full potential and beyond. I think it's time we truly start pushing the apps we use (break them if we have to) and start doing this level of stuff and beyond. Using RWBY as inspiration, I'm prepared to reprogram myself about my approach. :)
Season 2 is due to premier online on the 24th of this month. They did some production diaries throughout development - some good but light info for us 3D nerds and community types. The trailer is up right now. Visuals are looking a little better this time around. As usual I've done a little write-up at DigiSprawl. It is interesting to note that a lot more of the animation, than many suspect, is done with key frames and trad animation techniques.
Oh, and dsexton72, you could create some very good work with the tools you have right there. Hexagon is a great modeller. There are a number of tools in there that I wish were in LightWave.
RWBY is great. The making of-s are entertaining too. good pointer for this crowd.
I heard that an amazing animated short piece called 'ROSA' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MG11zhX6_jo) has some relationship with DS/DAZ products/tools. Anyone here know the extent of that? The characters and outfits are familiar looking, but there are enough effects involved that I'm certain it had some good post-production help outside of the animation engine(s)/tools.
great piece at any rate.
(fwiw, I just recently saw hint that RWBY volume 2 is due out soon, if not already)
