Entry Thread - Carrara Challenge 44 - Any Element, not Just the 5th Daz
Carrara Challenge 44 – Any Element, Not Just the 5th
Deadline 1/28 at 8 am daz Utah time
Ancient philosophers believed the Earth was made up of four elements, Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. Perhaps Carrara is our pass to a 5th Element, a virtual world. Modern chemists have identified many elements – in fact an entire periodic table of them. Your task is to create an image inspired by an element or elements of a virtual world, or an imaginary world, or even of the real world.. Whether you like your elements bold like ancient fire demons and water nymphs, heroic like comic book Fantastic Four, scifi like LeeLoo Dallas in the 5th Element, morally confused like King Midas's obsession with gold, ethically perplexed like scientists in the 1940s experimenting with atomic bombs, mystically wise like Taoist masters encouraging us to be more like water, or something completely different, we want to see it.
There are two categories of entries.
Category A – use a render pass from Carrara's multipass renderer list in some way, any way. Could be for postwork, but does not have to be.
Category B – use at least one of the following special Carrara drop-down menu elements – Fire, Fog, Cloud, Fountain, Volumetric Cloud, Old Volumetric Cloud, or Ocean Primitive.
Rules
4 entries allowed – yes, that is 4. Two in each category.
However, no more than 2 entries may be entered in each category. If an image qualifies for both category A and category B, the artist must select only one category when posting to the entry thread. You may not enter 3 or 4 images in a single category (although 3 or 4 may qualify). You can switch around until the entry thread closes for voting.
This Entry Thread will be converted to the voting thread on January 27, 2019. Midnight Daz Time. Voting will then begin.
The WIP Thread is here.

Credits: The rain is from Headwax's Storm Creek. All the figures are M3, and the outfits are from Wild West. The buildings are various structures in the Old West series. The Daz brain is used for the background bluffs.
Discussion: The illustration is for a book which addresses solutions to resolve polarized beliefs. Various objects were modified in the modeling room. Carrara internal processes include Volumetric Clouds, Displacement, GMIC, and Toon 3. No postwork.

Title: Bruce the Wizard Discovers The Particle Fountain
Artist: headwax :)
Category: A
Links to WIP thread: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/4271866/#Comment_4271866
Credits: M4, a random wizard hat and cape and foot things. Custom terrain and trees.
Discussion: Love the particle fountain - I made the particles glow with a glow parameter in the shader room then used Scene Aura. VWD did a little cloth draping.
This combines depth pass coverage pass material diffus pass on top of a shadow pass - the material diffuse pass is handy for getting back lost textures while postworking
postwork in photodonut and fortosketcher, Top layers use overlay parameter on a neutral gray layer frequently to get pencil textures
Also used a coverage pass.
Thanks for picking up the ball Ted. Great job once more

Links to WIP thread: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/4275766/#Comment_4275766
Credits: Mediteranean set. Wizard's hat etc. VWD drape some clothes.
Discussion: There's a few fogs in this one - great textures with the parameters. Depth pass gave good atmospheric feel when changed parameter to 'screen'. I knew I wanted that big shadow so I rendered out a shadow pass and layed it over a diffuse pass and tweaked opacitiees. I also used the diffuse pass to get some of the detail back on the wizard's shadowed side

Title: "Skeleton Rampage"

Links to WIP thread: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/4262206/#Comment_4262206
Credits: Daz skelton. Daz banner thingy. Rest is custom terrain and plants.
Discussion: These chaps are actually in a creek in the middle of a custom landscape. Used Fountains for some of the vegetation. Fogs and fires abundent. You can see the plain jane terrain here. https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/4253521/#Comment_4253521 The rocks are made with the organic modeller. I used a terrain shader to give them moss on top - m,ade the rock textures using Filter Forge. The trees are custom carrara ones. Some of the grass is hair. Some of the background trees are splats.
I rendered out the usual passes - most helpful was the depth pass to give reduced contrast in the distance (screen parameter) - and shadow pass. I also used post work filters on the different passes before combining them. I enhanced the fog and fires with Ron's brushes. The original render was without the banner _) rendered that out seperately and composited it in.....

Title: "Bruce The Wizard Lost in the Magic Forest (again)."
Artist: headwax :)
Category: A
Links to WIP thread: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/4270506/#Comment_4270506
Credits: custom terrain and plants. Modelled the flowres - used fountain for small leaves and for the thing around Bruce. Eaxh of the trees sits in an invisable vertex model at the roots - I added hair to the vertex modeller to simulate grass to make the trees 'sit' better in the landscape. Used Headwax's rain storm. Bruce wears A Mirage Jacket designed in the 1950's by the late Constance of France and custom underwear courtesy of Tiffanys (London) His underwear was (carefully) adjusted using VWD cloth sim.
Discussion: Used Fountains for some of the vegetation. ;The rocks are made with the organic modeller. I used a terrain shader to give them moss on top - m,ade the rock textures using Filter Forge. The trees are custom carrara ones. Some of the grass is hair. Some of the background trees are splats. Rendered out with a spherical camera then added the spherical effect in Photoshop elements. The background mounatins are a texture places on a cylinder.
I rendered out the usual passes - most helpful was the reflection pass to tweak the water reflection and depth pass to give reduced contrast in the distance (screen parameter) -
really enjoyed the flexability of this challenge. sure learnt a lot thanks

Category: A -Multipass
Links: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/4299791/#Comment_4299791
Credits: Animal figures by AM include the wolf 2 and the bison.
Discussion: Rendered once to get a straight realistic render and multipasses for volumetric primitives and background. Second step, new scene with plane of dimensions of first render. Shader of plane was a mixer of the straight render wit a rainbow gradient driven by the volumetric primtive pass and background pass to get the look of random colored brush strokes. Multipasses in bump channel to get some texture. Third step was adjusting step 2 for levels, multiplying a multipass as a color dodge, and that sort of thing to place more emphasis on the alpha wolf.

Discussion: Modeled some sexy scifi suits for G2F which I hope are in the style of the daz store. Created a Carrara terrain and placed some duplicated fog in the distance with blue hue. Placed this render in backdrop and used shadow catchers to place additional tsuff for the final render.

Discussion:
I used the Ocean primitive for the water and the Fire primitive plus Primovol Rising Smoke for the burning ship. The board is modeled in Carrara (the peg holes are just a texture made in Photoshop) and the ships are all from the included Carrara content. Lighting is an HDRI and I used the Distance Fog under Atmosphere to fade out the background. I threw the wineglass in just to fill in that big empty spot in the background; it's a spline object I made some time ago for another image and had saved in my browser tray. Postwork and some additional Fx done in Photoshop.

Discussion: The evil Dr. Ho has developed a chemical gas tank that shrinks humans. Moxie gets tricked in to the tank and Brash goes on an epic quest to find the cure. The name Dr. Ho was taken from late night TV ads by a guy selling back braces, and it matches nicely with the James Bond villain, Dr. No. In Ray Harryhausen's The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, a magician shrinks a princess, which sends Sinbad swashbuckling against Harryhausen's stop-motion (dynamation?) monsters. I rendered the scene and various multipasses, and supplemented a composite of a beauty pass and a Toon Pro render.

Discussion:
Obviously the render itself is is nothing special-- just me learning the interface. Have to say though, that multi-pass rendering seems very powerful option for postwork. Put them in photoshop where some filters, mixing options in layers, and tweaking with Wacom tablet made final image look quite different from the original.

Discussion: Thanks to Mom I still have a few drawings from childhood. After seeing some examples on the web I tried my own attempt at creating some 3D models of figures from the drawings. I then used Carrara's native 3D paint tools to paint the 'crayon' pattern on each model based on the 'drawings'. The kite comes from my memory of "Gayla Kites' and flying them...mainly into the ground...but sometimes they took off and would fly sky high...
