smoothing and collision for older content

Is there a way to add smoothing and collision controls to older Daz and 3rd party content? It's disappointing to spend up to $25 on a nicely presented product just to see a badly fractured mesh in more interesting poses.

If not, are there any tips to manually work around it?

I keep looking for a good loincloth and have tried everything from "DMR Totem Cloth" to "Rose's Egyptian..." sets from a 3rd-party site but they all have the same problem which could be remedied by smoothing.

Select the item in the scene and go to Edit > Figure (or Object, depending what the item is- conforming clothing items are usually figures) > Geometry > Apply Smoothing Modifier. You'll find the settings in the parameter's tab for the item. This will give you the collision option as well.

    Excellent. Thanks!
Guess I'd better start playing with some of those pulldown menus to see what they do. The jargon in the pulldowns has been a bit daunting...

One thing to remember with Collision is that poly count really lays a big part in getting a smooth collision, so Appling Sub-D (subdivide the mesh) can help in this regard.

Something else to remember, the smoothing modifier can't always do it all on its own. I was recently fitting a dress on an Aiko3-based figure, and I ended up using a bit of smoothing, a bit of manually dialled transferred morphs, a bit of posing morphs, a bit of "ghost" handles... Smoothing works best when the fit is nearly right, just needing a final tweak. Relying too much on smoothing can stretch the mesh in small patches and distort the texture.
