Render icons - Do they serve a purpose

Before I do something I'll regret, do the render icon images serve a purpose or is it ok to delete them?

Not that I've ever noticed. I don't even bother with the Render library. I render to my own folder.
It's ok to delete them, but if they're in a defined render library they'll only be recreated. Their purpose is for using the Render Library pane in DS (Window > panes > render library).
Open up the pane, and right click on it's tab and choose Render Directory Manager. Any time you save to a path listed there, it will auto-generate the thumbnails.
