I am having some difficulty with DS, it takes forever to open, and I keep getting not responding in the top bar whenever I try to do something so I want to uninstall everything related to DS, CMS and DIM and start fresh. I have already uninstalled all my content with DIM, but I want to make sure I remove all of the files from my computer. THen when I reinstall everything, I need it in the correct place so..

I install DS4.6 to C:/ProgramFiles/

but where should DIM be installed to ? Right now it is installed to librairies/Documents/DAZ 3D/InstallManager/ which I don't think is correct

and all the files I have already downloaded are on my removable HD in E:/DAZ Downloads will DIM still see them after I reinstall it or will I have to do them all again?

I hope someone can help me with removing all these files, I want my Studio to work properly

Maybe I should rephrase my question....I know how to run all the uninstallers, that's easy, what I wanted to know is

    1. does Studio put any files in hidden places that need to be removed manually?

    2. What would be the proper location to install the DIM to...your Studio folder in program files or a separate hard drive?

    3. If I reinstall DIM to a new location will it still find all the files I have already downloaded?

If anyone has done any of this already and has the answer it would help otherwise I will just do trial and error and see what happens and post my results for anyone else in the same boat, so it would help them :)

I used to have tons of issues with daz 4.5 and 4.6. removing everything with the uninstallers does not actually remove much. I have no idea what the uninstaller does, but I do know it does not remove directories, does not touch the registry. With that said, if you uninstall daz studio and then reinstall it, you've wasted your time. The only solution I found for issues with daz was to re-format the hard drive and then reinstall everything. This is also known as the "shotgun" approach to solving any issue. Does this solve the problem? in 99% of the time it will. Is this the best way? No. Troubleshooting program issues can be the hardest part of owning a computer and it takes dedication and loads of patience. Getting mad won't solve it. Quitting before you solve it won't solve the issue. Troubleshooting is a very logical event. You have to question everything. Examine each step. Build a correlation between what you know and what the program is telling you.

To answer your questions: 1. No and yes. All programs will leave behind a bunch of directories. Hidden files? Never found any program that hides files.
    2. The proper location doesn't exist. I always choose the default. If yo insist there has to be a 'proper' directory, then let it be the default.
    3. No. You will have to tell DIM where those old files are. You can only tell DIM where to put your files You can't tell it about old installations

The only reason I mentioned the shotgun approach is because that is in effect what I did when I installed a higher capacity hard drive.

Check in ProgramsData and in the Hidden Folder AppData, set folder view to Show Hidden, for files that the Uninstallers will not remove on a Win 7 PC. I believe most OS'es have the AppData folder now which is often in the USERS folder.

in the appdata folder I have /roaming/daz3d/dson/cache/data/ then several folders of names of artists. in each folder are files
named item.cache.dsf....what are these folders and can I delete them? it looks like every item I have used in DS listed in this cache

You could delete them, but DS will only rebuild them once you use that item again.

So now I have reinstalled the current version of DS 4.6.1.17, CMS and DIM. When installing both DS and DIM the CMS installed both times and each time I got the same error message saying it didn't install properly and to contact tech support. I was under the impression that CMS only installed with DIM now so that Carrara users didn't need to install DS to use DIM.

Anyway I don't know why I keep getting that error message when installing, I also had trouble uninstalling both DS and CMS, DS said it couldn't uninstall prior version as the dat file was missing, so when I deleted the EXE file by itself then the new version installed ok, same with CMS.

Are these issues just with my installation or has anyone else experienced these issues when reinstalling or upgrading to new versions?
I do hope these problems don't interfere with my new installation as I don't know what else to try to remove all files short of reformatting and I don't want to do that. I do wish uninstallers worked correctly to remove all remnants of programs. At least studio doesn't hang at the building interface splash page anymore....

So now I have started installing again, so far just Gen and Gen2 essentials, starting with new and working my way backwards through Gen4 and 3.

See if you have a file C:\Windows\SysWOW\nvinit.dll -- if so, rename it to nvinit.old
It's a known NVIDIA bug with their dual-GPU setups that screws up a lot of games as well as DS and DIM.

Just rename it, then try installing CMS again (there's an installer in the folder DIM is installed to, e.g. C:\Program Files (x86)\DAZ 3D\DAZ3DIM1\cms). I haven't seen any adverse effects from disabling that file. Apparently it attaches itself to other apps and sometimes it crashes or slows things down tremendously.

Hmm, never tried to update my driver using the NVIDIA Control Panel. I get the same error whether nvinit.dll is disabled or not.

tried to run the installer and got an error saying no changes made to the previous install...make changes or cancel installation. Do I have to uninstall then reinstall it?

Yes, uninstall it first if you can.

You guys might have issues with your cards. I've been running dual Nvidia GPUs in SLI for the last couple years and I've never had issues with games, dim, or cms.

Also, you don't actually update through Nvidia's app, it just searches for new drivers and then you click a link to download them. It's just a glorified search without having to hunt for it yourself on their website.

Judging by that error window though, it could be an issue with your MS Visual C++ libraries and not the Nvidia panel.

Vaskania, any idea how I fix that error or find out what's causing it?
