Why am I getting a message that says I'm missing files
this is the file it says I'm missing when I try to load Genesis into the work window.
/data/DAZ 3D/Genesis/Base/Genesis.dsf
I'm about to go back to 4.5

You need to go to your Preferences, and change the name of the Genesis file that loads on Startup from DSF to DUF. The format has changed to the newer one now. You should be able to load Genesis from your Content Library as usual, but the installation of DS 4.6 does not change your Preferences.
No, that's the file in the Data folder which should be a .dsf file (.duf is for the user-facing files that show in the content panes). If you were using an older version of DS uninstalling it may have uninstalled the content - did you install the Genesis Starter Essentials as well as the application? If you did the path may be wrong - if you used DIM but had already had DS installed from before DIM you may need to add the My DAZ 3D Library folder in your Public Documents to the list of content directories - you can do this by opening the Content Library pane, right clicking on each of the ... Formats headings in turn and choosing the Add ... Directory option for each.
I've loaded 4.6 on a totally new computer. I don't see a option to load each format heading
Not to load, to add as a directory - though if you installed 4.6 as the first version added that shouldn't be it. Still, open the Content Library in DS (Window>Panes(Tabs)>Content Library) and make sure that My DAZ 3D Library is listed under both Poser Formats and DAZ Studio Formats. If it isn't, and you are using the DAZ Install Manager to install, then right click on the ... Formats headings and choose the Add ... directory from the menu and select that folder.
it is listed in both directories.
OK, do you have a \Data\DAZ 3D\Genesis\Base\Genesis.dsf file in one of the two directories (you will need to use an OS browser to look, the Data folder won't - or shouldn't - show up in the Content Library pane.
I am having the same exact error message coming up when I start DAZ Studio Pro 4.6.
I have installed and uninstalled everything (including Carrara content) several times. I had previous versions of DAZ but never used it. I've tinkered with it, but have never been successful at creating anything in DAZ.
I'm using DIM, and following other posts relating to finding content, have unintstalled anything Genesis and DAZ 4.6, altered the DIM Install Library to point to
MyDocuments\DAZ 3D\Nov2013\Daz4_6
I leave the folders for the software itself to the default of C:\Program Files\ for (re-)installing DAZ 4.6.
I've followed the directions above (Nov 10), for adding a folder in the Windows>Panes>Content> and right-click, added a folder to the only Genesis.dsf I could locate on my C: drive, as well as the folder for other base figures, such as base male, female, child, Michael 5 and, Victoria 5 (and the thumbnails show in the dialogue).
However, when I save it all, restart DAZ, it still comes up with that same message indicating it cannot locate the Genesis.dsf file.
It DOES load a boxy figure, but I cannot load, say, a Michael 5 on top of it. Also, none of the thumbs in the left panes (smart content) show anything, just a slug with the title, but no thumbnail image.
/data/DAZ 3D/Genesis/Base/Genesis.dsf
If there's a quick way to alter where it's looking for this, great. Otherwise, how do I wipe everthing clean and install using only defaults so it can find the base characters?
Can you go to Edit > Preferences > Content Library > Content Directory Manager expand the DS formats and Poser formats sections and post a screenshot?
As you can see, I've put everything into a custom directory to help me get my mind around where everything lives.
The only GENESIS.DSF file I can find on the C: drive is in that longest directory. It is only 22KB. I was expecting the genesis base to be much larger.
P.S. Frank N. Furter?
The three entries that you have for DAZ Studio Formats are completely wrong!
If everything was installed into the path ending in /Daz4_6, then that is the path you should be using. You do not need to list sub-folders, DS picks it all up from the main folder. The one you have for Poser Formats is the default one, and it should also be under DAZ Studio Formats as well.
It would be a good idea to post a screenshot of what is in the /Daz4_6 folder, so that we can see if you have installed the content correctly.
To recap, if all of your DS content is in C:/Users ------------ /Daz4_6 then that is what you should have listed under DAZ Studio Formats, NOT anything els, definitely not /data or /Runtime.
All of those paths are wrong - you should have the C:\Users\john murphy\Documents\DAZ 3D\Nov 2013\DAZ 4_6 folder selected only. The Runtime and Data folders go in your content directory, and DS then sticks the path from the file (starting with Runtime or Data) onto the content directory path to get the full location of the file.
I suspect that the do-funky folder paths in the previous screen shot came as a result of going through the Windows>Panes>Content Library , but I'm not sure... I don't recall.
I've set the folder paths as recommended, but frankly, there is NOTHING in the C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Library folder. As mentioned before, I uninstalled all of my content completely, including DAZ 4.6, in an effort to comprehend where my content was hiding. This kookiness is the result. If it would be easier to re-install everything using defaults, I'll do it, so long as it will clear up the problem at startup with the missing Genesis.dsf.
The path you're using should be listed in BOTH DS-formats and Poser-formats.
Okay, I put the path into the poser section of the content management.
I'm still a bit curious why I cannot find using Explorer and search for Genesis.dsf. The only one that pops up is buried deep in some folder dealing with hair and is only 22KB.
/data/DAZ 3D/Genesis/Base/Genesis.dsf
I chase down the folder here, and it has only two subfolders, Morphs and UV Sets, no other content. Shouldn't there be several files, including Genesis.dsf?
I would imagine Genesis.dsf is fairly important and that it would be pretty substantial. In my uninstalling, re-installing frenzy, did I nuke the core Genesis stuff?
As I look at the 150 products I've purchased in the DIM, I don't see a "Genesis" individually. I do see Genesis Starter Essentials PoserCF.
It is installed in the Daz4_6 folder from the screen shots.
From which product does Genesis.dsf spring? How can I put it back in its place?
If the problem is the startup scene rather than the missing data file, go to Edit > Preferences > Startup and change it to genesis.duf
I've set the startup file. I still get the error, and it creates the boxy humanoid figure.
Here is what you should have listed in your DAZ Settings and then things should work properly...
Does it work if you load from the DS-format library (People > Genesis > Genesis.duf) as opposed to the Poser-format library (Runtime > Libraries > Character > DAZ People)?
I chased down the People>Genesis folder and it was empty of files, just subfolders (characters, poses, hair, etc.).
I went and found a Genesis.duf, a Genesis.CR2 (only 60 bytes), and a Genesis.PNG (thumb), copied it from where I found it and pasted to the People>Genesis folder. Still no luck.
Is there a way to uninstall everything, including DAZ 4.6, wipe out any config files, then put everything back in default locations? If so, where is that config file that is keeping mind of all this stuff? In DIM?
Did you install Genesis Starter Essentials, or just Genesis Starter Essentials PoserCF?
I took your advice to seek out Genesis Starter Essentials (without the PoserCF), and found it nowhere in my DIM listings of products. I know I had purchased it some time back. It must have gotten nuked somehow. I know it worked a few weeks back.
When I looked in the "Downloads" tab of DIM, I saw there was an "update" to the GSE, so I downloaded and installed. When I restarted DAZ, the error message went away, a default Genesis character showed up in the studio.
However, DAZ was not showing any thumbs for any of the content.
I'll finish up my part of this thread by saying I found the answer by reinstalling Genesis Starter Essentials in DIM.
