I googled "explosion stock footage video"… there are a lot.
Also some free stuff here: http://creatingfilm.com/free-stock-footage/
I also bought some. if I find their site I will PM you...
@holly wetcircuit: you rule!
You could look into the Fast FX Textures for Carrara. It had some explosions. They were inexpensive and I think the creator made them available for free download awhile back.
See the video links:

@Jay_NOLA: The website does not exist anylonger. :( Anyone has a working link to the free downloads?
It's not exactly what you want, but try this:
on YouYube type: 'green screen explosion'
@tjeb: Yay! I downloaded the file from YT. How can I make the green background become transparent in a backdrop-video?
I waybacked the site and got the download link for them.

I also found the thread that creator announced you could download them for free, and it has the password for the zip that you'll need.

If you wanted to use them for commercial use you had to pay $7 according to the what the waybacked site said.
You can contact the creator via a PM and ask about commercial usage.
You will need to have the codec H264 - mpeg-4 installed to use them. See the Read Me in the zip.
@Jay_NOLA: Yay! Thanks!
You can also take a look at this effects software, which is good and is not costly.
It has explosions and many other visual effects as well, and you can play with parameters to get exactly what you want:

I would use my video editing software (Magix) and use the green-screen feature.
In your case, you would end up with three layers
Very quick and simple demo; I made this in a few minutes.
