iRay volumetric ghost

What I am looking for is an iRay volumetric shader that works in layers to give a ghost like appearance to objects using it.

I don't want shadows unless the actual smoke is what is casting it, and I do not want to see the form unless the smoke is against the edges.

Should be able to be swirled for movement within the form, with each layer or instance being able to be changed differently from the other layers, so that essentially you wind up with a swirling mass of unidentified "something". I can see it not being too thick in terms of volume, more see through, unless overlapping.

P.S. I've looked at the iRay ghost shaders, not at all what I am looking for. I do not want to have the object visible, I want to have the swirling of the "smoke" appear to sometimes make the object, but mostly not (or appear to not.) Not looking for hte outlined look these appear to give, or the glowing.

As far as I am aware Iray does not give true voumetrics - 3Delight is better for this.

Purely for figures, there is this product, but I have yet to properly explore it:

Would certainly like a similar shader like this which could be applied to any object in a scene.

Thanks for replies. Yes I am startingt o think I'm looking for a needle in the galaxy haystack.

Xeno I've looked at that shader, it does okay for what it is intended to do, but the end result is a transparent glowing figure, and if you look at the advertising image #3, it doesn't handle hidden lines very well, if at all.

I guess what I am looking for is "smoke in a bottle".

I don't want to see the bottle at all, unless the pattern of the smoke has gotten to the edge. What I want to see is the smoke.

Only reason I say volumetric, is the Uber Shaders use the word when describing the smoke shader, been working with it, but it gives me the same results as the ghost shader mentioned.

And actually looking for Smoke shaders I find this: https://www.daz3d.com/fsl-rigged-and-morphing-atmosphere-props-and-shaders

Which is the closest I've found to what I am looking for so far, appears to be configured for a plane though. would have to see what it does on a box or form.

And in https://www.daz3d.com/pweffect the 4th promo image is more or less exactly what I mean, but I want smoke :) I am also not wanting it to show so much of the form to what it is applied to, that should be invisible. a tileable version would be great, so it can be changed to "swirl" in animations.

Post work probably your best option be it static or animated as you could render it solid with an alpha channel then overlay it on your scene as a layer with some opacity and blur, it can also have a shadow that way too

Anyone know if this is for iRay or not? doesn't appear to say in the usage or description.

    That's definitely for 3Delight.

    No it's not.

What you can try is the UberiRay water or glass shaders that you already have free.

Also if you have any iRay shaders meant to simulate glass, water, coffee, milk, and other volumetrics you'll get something 'ghostly' Also if you have any of the iRay cloud products:

    https://www.daz3d.com/above-the-clouds-for-iray-nimbostratus

for example, you can copy the iRay surface from a cloud and paste to the surfaces you want to make 'ghostly' looking. Add Emissive light to those surfaces for a 'ghostly glow'.

Some surfaces will be promblematic: eg: you plobably want to use the cutout opacity slider to completely hide internal surfaces of ghostly characters when needed: eg mouth is closed so turn off tetth, tongue, mounth visibility with cutout opacity to 0. turn off sclera visibility by setting cutout opacity to 0, and so on as needed per surface.

You won't get a 'perfect ghost' as designed and modeled by a 3D artist that way but you'll get pretty close to making any character you have 'ghostly' in iRay. Just choose angles, lighting, and closeups to highlight the strong points of your ghost.

Yeah, thanks all for the replies.

Think I'm going to have to just find a good cloud or something and play with it. The idea is actually not for a ghost (no glowing,) but a shadow man, mor smoke and shape than man. swirling so that every now and then a form can be seen, but more of smoke shape than an actual person.

    Again thanks for the replies.

I just bought the pwEffect bundle, I DID NOT KNOW WHEN I BOUGHT IT, but, it is intended for 3Delight, and has MANY PROBLEMS - I intend to file a ticket as soon as I have a chance. I'm just looking for more info about it to see if I can remedy the problems myself first.
