Will the Transfer Utility Work for Characters?

Hi,

I saw a tutorial on the "DAZ Prod" youtube channel about the transfer utility and how it works with clothes. I haven't used DAZ Studio for anything in the past but have something in mind. If I were to take one of my .obj characters into DAZ Studio and arrange Genesis to fit inside it, could I then use the transfer utility in the same way as you would clothes, and transfer all the weight and bones to it? Would I then delete the Genesis mesh or better yet hide it and have the .obj character morph with it?

Not sure if that would work or not but seems to make sense. Is this something people have already tried with good results?

I'm afraid that isn't what the Transfer Utility does - it is for transferring rigging from a figure to another figure that aligns with the original, for creating clothes and the like. On a new, differently proportioned figure you would have to set the figure up and rig it yourself, though you could then use the Transfer Utility to rig its clothes or other fitted items.

I use Carrara for rigging, so it should be easy to import a Studio character and delete the mesh to use the skeleton then? I never looked at a Studio rig but this should work eh?

I saw you tube which show, human shape obj which was sculpted or mesh mixered
was transfered rigs and weightmaps from genesis base.

in the video, the new old man move well (checked by aniblock I think)

The important point your figure shape need to fit genesis base rig well.

Simply because when you use transfer utility, your new obj can transfer genesis base rig.

I have not tired it, (I prefer simply make new morph shape for base genesis,,)
if I transfer from base genesis, I may nee adjust rig and weight again.

but at start point, if make human, I think transfer genesis rigs and weight is not bad idea.
(I think around eye or detail, may need many adjustment, or once remove weight then
    manually color again,,)

it can be a quick easy way to rig stuff for your own use in renders and video but cannot be shared as a rigged mesh with others as it uses Daz 3D weightpainting and rigging and morphs both Daz and third party can be transfered over.
I use it myself sometimes on premade mesh I can only render anyway but prefer to rig from scratch in Carrara if it my own model.
Am learning to do so in studio too.

http://www.daz3d.com/rigging-original-figures-in-ds4-pro is a good buy from the Daz shop for an indepth conventional look at the process.
I will not discuss any of the workflow in this book out of respect to the author.

there are other ways such as a quick messy one I use just converting objects to figures and adding childbones, aligning and weight painting them often one at a time
I mostly use this on hair props already conformed to Genesis via transfer utility for spring bones in iClone.
but a whole unique figue CAN be rigged this way but for me much easier in Carrara which I have if using in iClone, hower those will ONLY work in carrara and iClone not studio and Poser.
One day I will do a video outlining this method as it does not touch on any of the methods in Blondies book but rather a series of Daz3D.com videos on youtube and was my breakthrough moment into using studio rigging like Carrara but I need to get better myself before I dare start posting tutorials on it!.

Thx for the links. I watched the video and that's exactly what I needed to know. Now I don't have to figure out all the details myself if that's the route I take. Great help :)
I will keep an eye out for that book if I want to use Studio to rig at some point.
