DS 4.6 - Content Database issue

If I look at my content and try to see it by category, there are none. If I try to create one, it tells me I can't. I tried to import my old content database from DS 4.0, but it blew up saying it couldn't load the categories.

To be honest, as I'm re-installing much of my content anyway, I'd be ok with blowing away the database and starting over. But I'm not sure how to do that. :)

I'm already 1128 installed items behind (not including the stuff I have to install by hand that is non-DAZ installer compatible); so it would be nice to get started on this before the hill looks like a mountain and I just give up.

If you have nothing in Categories or Products, your CMS is probably not running.

Go to Start > All Programs > DAZ 3D, and see if you can start the Content Management Service from there.

If that doesn't work, you may need to uninstall CMS, and reinstall DAZ Studio. Do you use DIM?

    I am a DIM user ... wait that doesn't sound right ... :P

I didn't think to check for a service. I'll do that when I get back home tonight. Would be nice if the error messages actually said "Hey dummy, your CMS isn't running!"

    Don't worry, I'm a DIM user too :)

If you go to C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\Content Management Service, you should be able to reinstall it from there if it is not working correctly

The level below that C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\Content Management Service\databases is where the 5 db files are located. If you don't have any Categories set up your self, you can safely delete them, and then CMS will probably work again. You can then run the DB Maintenance options.

This article refers to the Smart Content Pane, but categories in DS 4.x and higher use CMS. The article goes through how to trouble shoot and make sure CMS is running. If you follow it all the way you will eventually delete your database and create a new one by re-importing your metadata.

Thanks for the tips guys. Between Jimmy's pointers and the article from Jared I was able to get the content database back online and functional. Now I just have to start assigning categories to all those items! 1200 packages installed via DIM and 1400 ZIP files from other sources....

    Good for you :)

Just remember to use the 'Export User Data' frequently when setting up your Catagories. You can find it in the drop down in the Content Library pane under Content DB Maintenance. That way, if you ever need to reset your databases, you can reload your own saved Categories as well, and you wont have to do all the work again.

I was looking at it last night (after I posted my thank you note). I think I may need to rebuild my runtime. I created one to let DIM manage it for DAZ content. My intention was to use the other one that already existed for my 3rd party content. Unfortunately, it also has a lot of duplicated content as I had a lot of DAZ stuff installed there too. Since I don't have uninstallers for those, detangling that mess may be more hassle than it is worth.

The good news is that I have a content installer that works with ZIP files; so if I just create another new content folder and install the 3rd party stuff into that, I can have a fresh install without really losing anything. I have the disk space to do it that way.

Then I can start categorizing stuff. My goal at this point is to have my libraries straightened out before March Madness. Or else I know I'll never do it. :P

CMS stopped working again... in the middle of creating a scene... It has happened to me 20 or more times over the last year sometimes I can get it running for awhile months even then poof it goes again.
This time uninstalled CMS, renamed data base, uninstalled DAZ3D, re-installed newest release of DAZ3D and restarted program... nothing.
I have tried several combinations and the best I can get is directories in smart content with just the folders and no content.
