Nube Question on Mesh Manipulation
OK, I am really new. I know that so please be kind.
I am trying to take a shirt that fits (conforming) to Michael 4 - I just want to cut the top of it and bend it like an open polo. I have Anim8or - Cinema4D and (Bluck) Blender. This seems like a simple task but I have found it to be very difficult. I've been trying to use Anim8or. I export my OBJ file and make the cut (Thanks for showing the button with scissors) but then all I get is crazy extrusion options. I just want to select the area and bend it back. If anyone knows of a clear way of doing this and can take the time to tell me, I would be very grateful. I'm not some big time animator - my interests lie in single frame renders. I just want to cut a mesh and bend a section of it simply.

Unfortunately, if you do that, you'll end up wrecking everything else about the shirt, once you bring it back into D/S (etc). 'Cutting' it open is going to change the vertex count and mess up the morphs and probably the UV maps, too...minimally, you'll be adding 2 new vertices. For that kind of work, it's best to find a shirt that isn't one piece. But if you do it to a posed export and don't care about the UV maps getting messed up, then it is doable.
As to the bending..I'd probably use Blender, select the two new edges, pull them up and then over, probably, individually...then run a cloth sim on the shirt with an imported, posed, M4 figure and pin the vertices (or a couple of them, at least) for the crease....
Am I doomed?
DAZ Studio, Poser, or another app?
The shirt conforms to M4 but do you want to use it on M4? To you want it to remain a conformer or not?
DAZ sells dynamic clothing in the store designed for use with DS and if you go the Optitex site, there are free items there as well. One thing to be aware of with dynamics for DS, they are still pretty much figure specific.
If you are using Poser, you have several options available. You can find a conformer that fits the style you are looking for. Chances are it may even be made for M4 (if that's the figure you are using). If not, you can turn it into a prop (there are free python scripts to do this as well as Poser's own tools for this). You can then take it into the cloth room and run sims to your heart's content.
Poser also has python plugins for creating clothing inside Poser by PhilC. His Clothing Designer bundle is available at PhilC.net.
At present DS does not have a cloth creation plugin. There is the built in player that gives you basic control of the cloth sim for the dynamic clothing item you are using. There is a more advanced Cloth Control plugin sold in the store but that is a separate purchase and far from cheap.
Doomed? Nah.
You could maybe try sculpting the collar up (without changing the poly count!!!) in Hexagon, Blender or similar program... then save off as an obj, import the obj via morphloader to the original shirt (if using Hexagon, it's easy to send items between it and DAZ Studio - if doing it all in a single session you wouldn't need to save a separate obj)... and make sure you save morph preset before closing scene.
In theory, that should give you a slider to move your morph of the collar into position from the default.
I'm using Poser and I want the shirt to stay used for M4 - after I manipulate. I think the python script is the best way...I will turn it into a prop and see how that goes.
Thanks for the feedback..Got into this a year ago and there are soooo many things to learn.
