So I've done a preliminary draft of a Coach style bag. Still have a lot of work to put in, but I think I've got the basic shape down. Question though, long or short straps?
Ohai, Blender!
For that style of bag, probably the short ones. Some come with both the short handles and a longer clip-on strap, if you're keen to offer it as an option.
I know it's late, but I use a giant boat-shaped short-handled bag, this style:
http://www.pursepage.com/juicy-couture-purses/juicy-couture-large-freestyle-bag.html
I have a purse because I need to carry stuff, and little dainty purses don't cut it!
Well, I did try to wait for an answer about whether they prefer long or short straps, but since no one answer right away, and I was already working on it, I went with the short strap. I'm starting to add a few details to the bag right now. And yeah, I use Blender.
Well, the short-handled square Coach bags are quite popular. Purses are a large and diverse category of items, so any two women can give you very different answers to your first question. Sometimes entire families of women adopt the "giant purse" or "minipurse" preference and pass it on to their children, and sometimes adopting a different style of purse from your Mom is a way to establish your individuality when you become a woman, so there's absolutely no rule.
Adding a few more details, but I'm wondering if I should model the inside pockets as well?
Up to you. One, you can never have too much detail (I can never have too many pockets that open on an item, myself) but two, you decide if the time investment is worth it to you personally.
If someone wanted to do a render or animation that shows the inside of the purse, then the inside pocket might be necessary. I say might as not all purses have that pocket. As for the strap length, why not make both and have it as a choice for those to get it?
Another question. I can't use DS... AT ALL. I want to make it so that the bag opens and closes, preferably with a zipper like the one in this image. Will DS take PMD injections from Poser? If not, how are morphs made for DS?
To create morphs in DS you can either use the bridges to other programs (currently only Zbrush or Hexagon I beieve). Otherwise, you can save the morphed obj and load it in morph loader (one of the tools in DS) to create the morph.
When I say I can't use DS at all, aside from the fact that I don't know the product, I also mean that my computer can't run the program. Can DS use Poser props with morphs built in? If not, I'll have to figure something else out.
Yes, as long as the morphs aren't a PMD injection and are actually in the figure/prop.
Great! That I think I can do!:-)
Having a little issue with creating a zipper in Blender. Everthing's modeled, just trying to get the damn teeth to follow a bezier curve. Anyway, I'm taking a break so I can look at it a bit fresher, but so far...
I even modeled inside pockets for cellphone keys, etc.
Nice!
Yes, the "ease" of working with bezier curves is a big chunk of the reason I bought Zbrush this year after using Blender since '10 or so. I've never, not once, been able to use them on a product I was going to sell. I literally use manual duplication and extrusion on these types of mesh elements.
It really doesn't seem to be that hard except I did something that cause the Zipper teeth to be way offset from the curve it's following and i can't figure out what I did wrong or how to correct it.
I think there are some zipper tuts on Blendernation or BlenderCookie...
My cell phone charger, micro-USB cable, Swiss army knife, sanitary pads + tampons, pain medication, antacids, emergency sewing kit (about tiny wallet size), band-aids...
But, of course, may I recommend this Kat Eggleston song to hear what other women have in their purse?

That bag is awesome, where can I get one?
Man, oh man, the things I learn just browsing these forums. Being a guy, I haven't yet thought about how to handle the purse thing in my scenes and renders. But they are necessary, so I'll have to take that up at some point.
I also never give any thought to purses IRL except when I'm out with a lady who has one because special accommodations must often be made. A lot of girls don't want to carry the purse here or there so they think nothing of leaving their purse on the floor of the passenger seat, in full view of the windows.
The last thing I need is to come back to a busted window and then have my date completely inconsolable because her whole life and all her personal information (including checks which contain bank ABA codes and account numbers!) was in that purse. It's always easier to make time to put the purse in the trunk. Or yes...hold it for her. :-)
Of course, even though I'm a guy, I often need to carry my own containers of paraphernalia around. On weekdays, it's one of two backpacks (depending on which laptop I'm moving about with). When traveling, it's the extra-large backpack with a couple of laptops, a tablet, an e reader, and all my stuff for that day. If going to work out or to someplace where I might need a change of clothes, it's a duffel bag containing said clothes, a pair of shoes, antiperspirant, cologne, floss, and a pack of those one-time-use toothbrushes. Sometimes, it's both backpack and duffel! Whatever the carrying case is, I often call it "my infrastructure" because I can't function without it.
Anyway, this has been enlightening and has made me think analytically about purses, backpacks, and duffel bags.
And now I realize that at some point, I think the ladies in my renders will start demanding them. And then underwear! :red:
Thank you to the OP for bringing up this topic, and to all of the respondents who have so generously shared their preferences and opinions.
One thing not mentioned yet is firearms and purses. I think my sister probably carried a firearm in her purse until her kids got to "reaching-and-grabbing" age. Now they're almost all old enough to carry arms, and no doubt at least one of them is armed at any point in time, even going to the movies. And the casual observer would never know it.
Here!
Also with the mask included.
Edit: It can fit a small laptop or a tablet computer + keyboard for it. Plus snacks and other stuff. If it happens to be a model that has little loops for spare rifle ammo, that's where you should plugin tampons.

A guy can even get away with that...if he pulls a laptop out of it...and uses the ammo loops for ammo...
Guys do carry bags, just not handbags. Well, most guys don't. :-)
being unemployed for awhile, I had to park my car for a year or so and start catching the bus, which means that whatever I needed to schlep along with me had to go into either a backpack or a gym bag.
Yeah, but most of the time it's obviously a backpack/gym bag...this thing isn't but it's not 'prissy' or whatever the current term is for something just for show. I bet it would make a decent tool bag...too.
I love this disclaimer!
Trivia: the masks have been used as the base of the moon trooper oxygen masks in the movie Iron Sky. We might get DIY instructions later.
Mostly unissued Finnish military surplus.
LOL!!
I carry a biiiiiiiiiig bag, "hand to pit" style- mostly because it functions as a baby bag, shopping bag, and purse all in one :)
So generally, keys, money, train pass, phone, book, toys for kid, wet wipes, diapers, folding umbrella (rains a lot on a tropical island), makeup, advil, bandaids, hand sanitizer, handkerchief (more for washing/tying hair back or whatever), small folding hair brush, small pack of tissues, folding toothbrush, snack and a water bottle for kid, allergy medicine, flash light, daily planner and a small calculator, and chinese language dictionary.... and usually a packet of coupons for current week's sales and various discount cards. Depending on the weather and time of year, a tank top or an extra sweater as well.
That's why i carry a big bag! And if i buy a couple groceries, like milk and bread and some apples, I'll just dump it in the bag too. Ha. Bag of holding, it is!
I checked out some of the street views in Google Earth to see what kind of handbags people use, and most seem to be fairly good sized and carried by shoulder straps of varying lengths. My wife generally has medium sized purses with long straps. She must carry a brick or two in them because they always seem to weigh about 30 pounds. This thread caused me to check my content to see what I have there, and I've attached what I have collected so far.
Still working on the bag. Installed a Zipper today. In Blender the zipper actually works. in Poser, I will have to figure out a way to make it a morph. Gonna start detailing the bag next.
EClark1849, I am looking forward to your bag!
And here are some tasteless little fancy-schmancy varieties I made from jonnte's handbag (over at R).
WOW, haven't checked for a few days, and look what you're up to!! Looking good sir. :nods:
While reading through the past couple of pages of posts I, too, was going to mention the 2 separate length handles. One of my coach bags has that. It makes it more versatile, as I like a shoulder length strap when I'm out shopping so I can leave my arm free for carrying shopping bags, and it still has the shorter strap for when I'm out to dinner or a movie and don't need to have it on my shoulder.
Can't wait to see more as you continue to work on this.
I would've said not "girly", but yes, this is very non-gender specific.
