How is Alembic Exporter different from FBX?

Seen Daz has a new product out called Alembic Exporter, how is this different from exporting in the fbx format?

Case use question... Could we block keyframe poses in Daz Studio and export the file with blocked keyframes intact into Motionbuilder and work out the animation?

I realize fbx exports keyframes but their a mess and not editable in other programs.

Alembic exports an animated sequence of vertex positions - it doesn't preserve rigging as Collada and FBX do.
