This is my third attempt at simulating collision with the hands and the hair. This time I used PhilW's Lo-Res V4 Proxy Figure and replaced the hands with 6 spheres per hand (palm, thumb, index, middle, ring, pinky). I also increased the number of segments per hair and used a sphere for the bangs to eliminate the poke thru.

Thanks for the encouragement. I started way back with Raydream Designer and kept up with Carrara until version 5. I just returned to using Carrara at 8.5 and this forum is helping me a lot.

A fellow former Raydreamer! I knew you were alright! ;-)

That last one looks much better than the first attempt.

So, how are the simulation times? For myself, I have an older computer, so when I use dynamic hair, it is almost always for still renders, but I am intrigued by the animation capabilities of the hair.

The simulation time are getting better, this experiment was about a 1 minute per hair group for a 4 second animation. For stills I wouldn't worry about the simulation as I think you have more control brushing and styling the hair in the hair room.

One of the reasons I returned to 3D was I finally got a PC that could handle animation.

I know this is more about the hair sim, but I was particularly struck by the volumetric lighting in this latest example - great work!

Thanks, I "cheated" and added the light rays in After Effects since I was rendering the figure with an alpha channel.

This is another experiment with Hair in Carrara 8.5 Pro. This time I used millennium cat with some free aniblocks and applied some default fur. There is no simulation and it needs a hair cut, but it's so FLUFFY =)

Have you looked at Holly's cat hair tutorial?

I was just going to post the link. Glad you found it!

BTW, if you want to learn some advanced shader techniques, please look at her excellent photoreal sun tutorial. I wouldn't be where I am with the texture room today, if it weren't for her sharing her knowledge here over the years.

Very cute! Where did you get the AniBlocks? I saw there were some on ShareCG.com but it looks like they have been removed.

Thanks for the comments and feedback. I got the aniblocks a long time ago, but I think they where from shareCG. UGH the link has been removed. http://www.sharecg.com/v/48146/gallery/2/YouTube-Video/FREE-aniblocks-for-DAZ-millennium-cat

This is a revision to my last experiment with the cat getting a hair cut via the awesome Carrara fur tutorial at http://www.3d.wetcircuit.com/tutorials/carrara-fur-tutorial-comicbook/

The tutorial taught me a lot about how hair actually works in Carrara and the real power is in hair shader. I was able to "cut" the hair length and apply the skin texture by use of texture maps. =)

That turned out very nicely. Holly makes a splendid tutorial, does she not? Just awesome. You did a fine job of it. Very nice indeed.

Her tutorial was amazing, and the others seems just as good. Also your tutorials have assisted me immensely, thanks for the help.

PS. i think my next purchase has to be your Carrara EnvironKit - Woodlands. It looks awesome. =)

I have some by KA, they were linked in his youtube video, there is also a lick butt one somewhere, a walk cycle and cat gallop.

    Very nice.

You can use it for lots of stuff. I used it for moss before.

    Thanks.

If you want to look at it, I included it in some extras for a scene I'm giving away. It isn't loaded in the scene directly.

Or you can get it at ShareCG where you can view some images from the scene, as well as see an overhead view:

Thanks evilproducer, It looks like you have some great stuff on shareCG.

I tried multiple hair groups again. I created a hair object on a genesis figure, painted two hair groups (mustache, beard). When I drape this object they appear not to drape. As seen in the attached image 1.

I also placed my wig object on the figure for comparison. It drapes fine, and the mustache & beard don't drape correctly. All hair settings are the same.

Also attached is a version with two mesh objects (mustache, beard). These objects appear to drape fine.

Any ideas on why this might happen?

I assume you have joints in the guides. Maybe the stiffness settings? Hair type?

The hair settings in the last examples are all the same. The only thing different is in the first version there are two hair groups applied directly to the Genesis figure. In the second version the hair is applied to two meshes parented to the Genesis figure.

This is my first experiment with a Dynamic Hair Beard and Mustache applied to a Genesis figure in Carrara 8.5 Pro. I created 2 hair meshes (beard, mustache) and applied the same hair settings from my previous experiments. Then I added a hair length map to the torso and a light fuzz to the upper body.

There are still problems but I think it's another step in the right direction.
    What do you think?

    Nice looking tigers!

I just had a look at the beard example as well, it is nicely done, but beards don't really move that way, there would be very little noticeable movement in the beard, despite the vigorous dance moves(!). But as a dynamic hair example, it works.

    Thanks Phil,
There are a lot of problems with the beard simulation. Beards don't move that way, but I thought it looked better to have a little more motion than my semi-static beard tests. Plus I had to try out some chest hair length maps based on this great study at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2610947/ =)

    I love your tiger render!!!

I have found using dynamic hair on a conformed beard slightly better for me, just colliding with beard, though my results less than satisfactory
    a beard proxy perhaps?
or fur up a beard and animation morph it, I do THAT with conformed hair. ie put dynamic hair on it, only drape them morph the hair manually a bit

    Thank Wendy,
Holly's great tutorial has inspired me to try her techniques on lots of different figures and learn how hair actually works in Carrara. I tried Look at my hair in DAZ studio, but was never satisfied with the results. I'll have to try your techniques as my experiments are leading me to the conclusion that full simulation may be overkill for most situations. Like most simulation issues, key framing always allows for greater control.

Has anyone tried Carrara hair with Luxus for Carrara?
