Slightly OT: Learning from a photographer

If you're on Facebook, there's a good chance you've already seen a link about Elena Shumilova while her medium is photography, if you wanted to learn more about posing your characters and framing an image, you could learn a lot by looking at her images with a critical eye.

Go beyond "Aww, that's beautiful/precious/lovely..." think about what makes you feel that way. She's conveying emotions through those images, which is what we try to do all the time in our artwork as well. Obviously, with over 1.3 million views of her portfolio ... she's doing something right!

    You are right, amazing work.
And she only started photography in 2012...

For those who (for some reason) might be interested in my thoughts about training yourself to look with a critical eye, I posted a brief article on my blog about that topic this morning Learning from Elena

I just saw a bunch of her photos on quickmeme at lunch and I noticed how amazing they looked and had to be a photo studio, then I find out it's someone who learned to do this in a year. Some people just connect to it, some (like me) take ages and still have lots to learn.

    Great link!

I agree Strat. There are some who have an innate talent for seeing things like how to frame a photo, capture the right moment in time, lighting, etc. She clearly has an artistically oriented mind, and has found a medium that she can express herself in very well.

I've been thinking that after some of my more technical bits in my tutorials are done, I may brush off some of my old photography information and guides and share how tips for photographers can help 3D artists as well.
