Lighting and rendering
Hello all I have been having some problems with lighting. When I add a light and use shadow to my render it will crash the daz studio program and give me an error message. I have been having this issue for sometime now and it is getting really old. At one time when I was using Version 4.0.0.335 Standard I could use any light and did not have a problem. Now I Version 4.6.1.17 Pro and the only light that I can use is the new linear point light and even that will sometimes cause problems. None of this seems to happen until I attempt to add shadow to the render.
My system is as follows
Win 7 Home premium 32 bit
AMD Phenom IIX2 555 processor
4096 MB Ram
DirectX11
Nividia GeForce GT240.
I have turned in a ticket to daz but was only told that I need to have a 64 bit system in order to run daz. However when I was using the older version I was able to create a render with 1 V4, 3 M4's a millennium horse, 3 low rez horses, background along with costumes and gear. using a 32 bit system. Was hoping someone out there can help me out.
Thanks.

If you mean DAZ Studio 3 then yes it was built to run on a smaller system than is needed for DAZ Studio 4+. And I think the early versions of DS4 might have. But DS4.5 and above need RAM as it now supports many more functions and the Render Engine is newer as well. I think only your amount of RAM is the issue not 64 Bit as 32 bit is still offered as a down load. 4MB and 32 Bit limit the amount of ram the program can call for use.
Thanks for the reply Jaderail
So you think I need more RAM and wont have to build a new system? I eventually want to get a 64 bit system but money is kind of tight right now.
You won't benefit from more RAM on a 32 bit system, you are at the limit now.
From someone that just came from Vista Dual Core 2 GB ram to WIN7 Quad Core 8GB (upgradable to 16) I can say 64 bit and more RAM makes the world of difference. I can finally leave DS3A.
Thanks Szark
I think that I will be going to a 64 bit system here in the near future.
Windows 7 32 bit allows a maximum allocation of 2 GB per application by default but you can change that to 3 GB which may help unless you did this already. This is the RAM allowed to a single application, the OS still sees 4GB but it gives the app more headroom to work in when it needs more than 2GB. still with 3GB RAM and DS4.6 you may have to keep those renders very simple.

StratFDragon couldn't Ringo use LAA http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/large-address-aware.112556/ to increase the Ram usage more than 3.15 GB.?
If I recall correctly, Daz Studio is large address aware and can address up to 4GB as 32-Bit application. However, the 32-Bit Windows cannot grant the full 4GB to an application - by default it is 2GB for applications, rest for the system. With the already mentioned /3GB switch basically the distribution between system and applications shifts then, granting more memory to the applications and less to the system.
I did run Daz Studio for a long time with the /3GB switch on a 32-Bit Windows with 4GB RAM and it helped a lot.
Got you. Yeah I had for a while 4GB on the old 32 bit system and it did help a lot.
Thank you all for the replies. It sounds like I just need to upgrade to a 64 bit system. I appreciate the advice however Im not that computer literate. I understand most things that you are talking about but fear I do not have the skill to go tinkering around in the inner workings. So any advice on what kind of system I should have built to run Daz like it was nothing??
I cant speak for the effectiveness of what Szark and Renpatsu mentioned, but I trust their assessment of things. However I'm unfamiliar with their suggestion and here's something to consider; The link I posted is incredibly easy to use and will not cause any harm to your computer, it's actually part of the Windows OS but Microsoft leaves it off out of the box and while your saving up for a 64 bit system this method is free.
What the switch will do is give an application like Daz Studio an extra 1GB from your 4 GB RAM to use when hits that 2GB limit that Windows 7 32 is built with turned on. The reason that the limit is there in the first place is that most people tend to multi-task in smaller applications that don't generally need 3GB or more but this logic does not apply once you get into the world of graphic design (for print anyway, but not really for web) and 3D modeling and rendering (and science too of course) so that switch can work wonders.
How it works is:
* Right-click Command Prompt in the Accessories program group of the Start menu. Click Run as Administrator.
* at the command prompt type
bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVa 3072
* press enter, and restart the computer.
This change will remain on, regardless of shutting down, rebooting, etc, but to disable the 3GB switch you need to
* Right-click on Command Prompt in the Accessories program group of the Start menu. Click Run as Administrator.
* At the command prompt type
bcdedit /deletevalue IncreaseUserVa
* press enter, and restart the computer.
and for system, I have an i7, 12 GB RAM and decent GPU but Daz Studio can crawl on my computer like a crippled crab without a crutch at times, I don't know of any realistic system under $2,500.00 that will run it like nothing, but you can probably build something for under $1,000.00 that does a very good job, possibly really good but unless you have money falling out of your pockets you'll probably need to built it and you'll need to take the word "laptop" out of your vocabulary IMHO.
One thing to consider is to lower the render bucket size. I don't know if it can be effective as I don't have this problem
Another thing is to minimize the Windows Aero Theme memory consumption : Control Panel-> System->Advanced System Parameters->Performances Parameters->Adjust for best Performance. You'll lose all the Aero Bling Bling but will get a bit more memory free
The /3GB switch could also help as well.
Also open your Windows Task Manager and see if there are some programs that eat memory and that you don't need
However most efffective way for you would be to buy at least 4 Gb additionnal RAM and migrate to Win7 x64
Thanks StratDragon
I will try this switch and see if that helps. I am not really looking for something that eats Daz like candy but it would be nice to be able to make the renders that I want to without pulling my hair out. Thanks again for the help.
Well StratDragon
The switch thing seems to work. I was able to use a distant light with a building and V4 and M4 and it seemed to work. I really appreciate the help.
Takeo.Kensei I will also try your advice any and all will help.
Guess its time to start a new paper route so I can save for a new system. Thanks again everyone.
