Is there a trial of Octane?

Hi all!

Yesterday there was a little hubub about promo renders using Octane, which got me looking at it and it looks really cool. It's also equally impressive in it's cost, which I can totally understand.

Is there a trial for DAZ or anything that I could fiddle around with? Even barring that, what do users of it think? How's the learning curve? Does it speed up or slow down render speeds? I'm a huge stickler for render speeds!

In that case, don't bother. Nothing beats 3Delight.

And, while on their site, have you noticed you need a CUDA capable NVIDIA graphics card.
There is a GET DEMO button.

Yup! I have an NVidia 760, which has CUDA.

    Well aren't I a fool? lol

Octane as you may have discovered by now, is a very capable renderer. The render process uses GPU hardware acceleration and is very fast. The learning curve is simple and the Daz plugin makes it very familiar for Daz Studio users.

There is a demo version of the Poser plugin for Octane, but not for DS. The PDF manual that comes with the demo version of Octane has suggested settings for exporting your scenes from DS to Octane. There is a plugin for DS in beta, but no demo version yet.

If you have Poser, the Poser plugin demo is a great way to test Octane. After playing with the Poser demo for about a week, I took the plunge and got Octane and the DS beta plugin (the betas are half price with a free upgrade to the full version(s) when released). The DS plugin isn't as "polished" as the Poser plugin, but it is quite good and very usable, especially for a beta version.

The attached image was done in DS=>Octane, with no post at all (for the Aiko contest). and it took about 15 min. to render, which is quite fast considering all the reflective materials in the scene. Most of the materials are Octane shaders slightly modified from the LiveDB samples (except of course the skin). Octane is a fairly big investment, but IMHO it's well worth it. It's really amazing to have this kind of speed with an unbiased render engine.

    It's a quadcore i7 laptop with a Geforce 670M/3Gb VRAM (about same as a 560 in a desktop).

This was cooked for only 3 min. Octane is very fast and easy to use.

Same scene added a fog layer with Octane internal tools, cooked for shorter time since fog will obscure quality.

Yes, but there is no" make art" button. You will have to work on the material to get your preference. There are too many skin types including animals and monsters.

Were you able to try the stand alone?
If so let me know I can send you a material to test. There are several materials in the online material room
