Unable to create container even after full wipe and reinstall [SOLVED]
Hello, after much reading and frustration, i uninstalled my content and my Daz Studio applications, as well as the CMS, and deleted the files in ...appdata\roaming\ - rebooted, then installed the newest Daz Studio, 4.6 Pro.
And I still cannot create any categories!
People say this is a result of the Content Management Service app either not running or being blocked by Windows firewall. But I have been watching the application in a process explorer app, and have configured Windows firewall to allow Daz Studio as well as the ContentManagementServer.exe file to have full access, local and web.
But when i run Daz Studio, it kills the CMS service. If I manually restart it, it doesn't make any difference. I cannot create any categories in my Content Management tab, and my Smart Content tab remains empty.
As far as I can tell, I scraped the thing to the ground and started building again, brick by brick, and it doesn't work!
Does anyone have any idea what's going on?
Windows 7, by the way. Thanks!

It sounds like a corrupted database file.
Do you have your own Categories set up? If not, it would be easier to just delete the database files, and restart DAZ Studio and new empty one will be recreated. You will then need to re-import your Metadata to use Smart Content.
You could try to Reset Database from the drop down menu in the Content Library, under Content DB Maintenance first, and see if that will help. After you run the Reset Database you would need to Reimport Metadata from the same menu, and this step cannot be undone.
I tried resetting database and reimporting it, but no change.
I just reinstalled Daz Studio, upgrading in the process from 4.5 to 4.6 pro. I deleted all of my content, and only reinstalled Michael and Victoria 4 base so far.
if I right click the Categories link in the Content Library tab, and select "Create a Sub-Category" then enter a name for it, I always get the same response, "Unable to create container" Same thing happens if I right click a content folder and try to create a category from it.
Also, if I try to search my content, in this case it should be simple - I search for "Michael" and nothing happens. No search results. It gives me a highlighted text with a magnifying glass icon at the bottom of the list in the far left pane that says, "Search: michael" - but that's all. No results anywhere.
I even uninstalled the CMS at one point. It's installed again, but I don't think it's working right. Is it supposed to start when i launch Daz Studio?
CMS runs at Windows startup, and stays there whether DS is running or not.
You should get rid of your current database files to correct this. Mine are in C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\Content Management Service\databases, and there are five of them in total. If you can't find them there, do a search for master.vdb and that should lead you to the correct path.
Stop the CMS if it is running, move or Delete all five files, start CMS, and then start DAZ Studio. That should correct everything, and you can then reimport Metadata.
Too bad I couldn't try your latest advice - because I got it fixed before you posted. So I may never know exactly what was wrong.
But for the sake of anyone else with this kind of trouble, here's how I fixed it. I closed Daz, killed the CMS service, and uninstalled it, then I deleted all of those files you mentioned, and for that matter, the entire CMS directory under c:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\. Then I reinstalled it using the installer found in c:\Program Files (x86)\DAZ 3D\DAZ3DIM1\cms\.
That installer file looks almost identical to the actual service exe. But it's called DAZContentManagementService.exe and the installed exe is called ContentManagementServer.exe
Okay, now when I run Daz Studio, the CMS keeps running! And when i look at my Categories in the Content Library, it actually has the default subcategories now! It didn't have them before, and it has been a long time since I saw them, so I didn't even realize they were gone. So that's another clue to anyone who is having a problem with it - your Categories link should say "Categories >" with the little right arrow next to it like all the other links above that open up another pane to the right, and so on.
At least now I should be able to create my own categories to organize my content, regardless of how crazy it wants to install itself.
Thanks for your help.
Thanks for this thread, and this info. I had basically just given up on CMS and the Content Library, and had, in effect, given up on Daz3D Studio. I've been using it since 2005 and gone through all the iterations and was basically happy with 3.x and its Content Management system. With the 4. series, for me, it lost all functionality.
The resetting of CMS steps here worked like a charm, and I look forward to actually using this instead of considering it, and then not because it was too frustrating.
Thanks again.
TIP: For Future referance. IF you lose Smart content after it was working 99% of the time the Database has a error and stopped loading. The only fix is to replace it. Do a Export of USER Data often to keep a back up.
Also Never install content With DAZ Studio open and running. The CMS and DS are BOTH reading the file as It is getting a new Write. That can cause a Database write error no matter how safe the coders say it is. Always Close DS before installs of any type.
