Daz Studio 4.6 Crashing...

edited December 1969 in Daz Studio Discussion

Hi. Since yesterday, DS 4.6 has crashed on me at least 5 times while trying to render(any scene). The link provided to report a bug that pops up with the info, does not work either. Now, I still can render scenes (when I re-open it) but out of no where, it decides to crash. Never had a problem before since 4.6 version came out, this is the first. Any ideas?
Thanks

Does anything show in the log file?

To find the Log file, go to Help > Troubleshooting > View Log File.

Also, what OS are you using, what RAM do you have, and is this the 32 bit or 64 bit version of DS?

Hi. I'm using windows 8, RAM 10.0 GB, and DS is 32 bit.

I don't know much about Windows 8, but Win 7 can only 'see' 4 GB RAM when using a 32 bit application, and I would imagine Win 8 to be the same.

You really want to get the 64 bit version of Win 8, or if you have it already, the 64 bit version of DAZ Studio. I am sure your problem is memory related. Did you manage to find the Log File, and is it any help? Look at the last few lines just before the restart of DS to see if there are any clues.

I have the 64 bit for Windows 8. So i'm guessing that I have to re-install DS? If re-installing DS 64 bit, do I lose all of my content/library? The Log File, this is what I have....

I was going to say earlier that my hunch is memory related so I am with Jimmy on this, having suffered this all last year. Now with a 64 bit system and 8 GB Ram I haven't had one crash.

no, it will not loose anything. You can have 32 and 64 bit Studio installed and they will share the library if you like, you can have them both running at the same time. Obviously if you share your library and delete a file from one version it will gone for both versions.

I've done my own tests. 32 bit version of Daz Studio and 3Delight can only use 1.2 GB of memory total before crashing at least on Windows XP. I'm leaving out all the technical details to avoid confusion.

On Linux, under WINE..I'm not sure, but I imagine that if I ran out of swap space, it might crash...(32 bit DS)...it gets unbelievably slow, but still keeps chugging along. The highest I've ever had it during a render was 3.9 GB (for DS running the render) out of 4 GB...

And each version of Windows is different, with XP being the 'worst', on memory management/DS memory crashes/amount of memory that will be 'consumed' before a crash happens. One of the things that makes more recent versions of Windows better, is better management of what gets swapped to disk and how that swapping is managed. Windows does guard the memory it uses for itself, so anything else can/will be sacrificed, first, but other than that, the more recent the version of Windows, the less likely you are going to run into memory related problems...to a point. And 32 bit has a 'hard' limit of 4 GB...there is no way around that, but how the OS treats approaching that limit is what matters. And Windows 7 and newer are a lot better at it...especially if the OS is 64 bit with plenty of RAM.

But the simple fact is, a large chunk of modern 3d software NEEDS to be running the 64 bit version on a 64 bit OS with at least 8 GB of RAM to not encounter problems...and the more RAM the better (16 GB or more isn't really outrageous for this kind of work).
