Can´t load hair props and /or materials
@Moderators: Please move Thread to Nuts ’N Bolts. Sorry for posting in the wrong forum.
Hi Community,
i have a strange problem. sometimes i can´t load Materials and / or Hair Props on Genesis 2 based Figures.
What i do:
i load a figure to an empty scene. For example: Josie. Then i try to load the "Emo-Skirt" from this package (http://www.daz3d.com/teen-josie-6-products/glamour-darkness-for-emotions). This works fine. Loaded as Smart Object.
But when i try loading another material (there are 3 different Sets in Content Manager), nothing happens. No error, nothing appears.
When i try loading it the same way, in an empty scene (with no figure loaded), the materials are applied to the skirt.
The same happens with other Genesis 2 Figures and Hair props. For example when i try loading Hair, sometimes the hair is not visible (not loaded). After removing the figure from scene, the hair prop can be loaded.
Any ideas?
Another question related to this problem:
I thought, a Smart Object and all surface settings are visible in Smart Content and Surface tabs? I ask this because i installed "glamour-darkness-for-emotions" with Install Manager and the Clothes (Skirt, Top, Gloves) are shown in Smart Content tab, but all materials (different looks) are not visible in Surface tab. I can access them only with content manager (but this doesn´t work, as i wrote above)
Thank you
Chris

In the case of materials, this usually is because the item that the materials apply to wasn't actually selected in the scene when you went to apply them. It works in an empty scene because there is only one object there, when there are multiple objects, DS doesn't know which one you're tying to apply the material settings to; so it doesn't apply them to anything. You should always make sure before applying material settings that you have selected the item you want to change the materials for first.
Hair can be the same way. When it expects to be loaded as a smart prop parented to Genesis 2, if you don't have Genesis 2 selected when you double-click on the hair, then DS doesn't know what to parent it to. So it doesn't load the hair. I've gotten into the habit of always making sure I have my figure selected when I'm dressing him/her.
Caveat to the above advice ... FIGURE hair may not like that. You'll see some posts around these forums about how people have issues where they have hair that deforms when they pose Genesis 2. That's because the hair was loaded when Genesis 2 was selected. For hair that is a figure (actor), you should load it with nothing selected so that it doesn't try to "Fit to" your character and cause you issues.
Finally, what is available on the Smart Content pane changes based on what you have selected in your scene. And even then you will only see things that are properly tagged with metadata which associates the content with each other. So, while Smart Content works well for most modern DAZ purchased content, older products and 3rd party products aren't likely to support the Smart Content feature. And if the content artist missed a tag or two, you may not see it even then.
On the whole, in my opinion, Smart Content is a great idea, but relying on it will likely mean that you're going to miss content that you have installed just because it won't show in that view.
Hi JonnyRay,
thank you so much for your great answer and explanation! You got the point and you are right with your guess. My fault was, not dbl-click the object ( in this case, the figure). I tried it again with right click "select dbl-click" and it works. Well, this was a very stupid fault, wich i made.
I´m new to this and i´m very thankful to get such a great help!
Thank you! :-)
have a nice evening
Chris
