weight paint distorts mesh

For some reason the weight paint is distorting the mesh badly. This didn't happen in maya. There must be some setting I don't have on. Any help would be much appreciated.

Probably you are doing something wrong, because it works fine. Weight painting makes the mesh follow the bones. You need to give more info, like an example. If you have attached the skeleton / bone, you will need to make many weight paint adjustments, because it is never right as a start. Or search for weight painting at this forum.

There are several ways to adjust the weight paints in C8.5. The most straightforward is the brush in the vertex modeler with the "animation mode" tab selected in the "edit mode" menu in the upper right. There are three icons in the properties tray. Animation mode is the middle icon.

The brush in the weight painting tool can be fine tuned. Once a bone has been selected, there are settings for brush size, strength, and smoothness. Select the settings for the brush so that the you get the results that you want.

If you want control over which bones affect an individual vertex, select that vertex, and select the "bones" tab (between "morph" and "global").

I just readjusted the bone location. It works ok now.
