Animating opacity?

lets say you wanted a ghost to materialize out of thin air. Is there a technique for animating opacity? I have played with this and it seems opacity is either one setting or another, it does not happen gradually as I want it to.

    one way - do render frames with a little opacity added say every 20 - paste them together in video editor

    I was afraid you were gonna say that. That would be the last option if I can find no other way. Thanks for the input

    @FRDM:
    you probably used Mdd's ghost shader, but try something else.
    Here i used one of AoA's gummy shaders and without any script I was able to animate the opacity on one of the characters including eyewhite.
    (didn't bother with other parts of the head)
