Man, I'm really outta the loop.

Is is just me or is DAZ releasing a new character every ten minutes? I don't think a week's gone by when I haven't gotten an email making a new announcement. I guess Genesis' versatility makes it possible?

I lost my laptop last year and haven't done any 3D since. Hopefully I'll be getting a new one within the next few months and can reload Poser. Maybe then I'll stop being so lost about what's going on with the only website I ever had to visit daily. :cheese:

P.S. And just because I can let's take advantage of this poll DAZ has added. ;-)

No doubt we'll be seeing David and Aiko 6 before long as well. Now, call me old-fashioned if you like (I've been called worse) but the only thing I dislike about a new character release, and I stress the ONLY thing, is why they inevitably feel the need to add yet another new UV set to the mix.

We've got Victoria 6. We have Olympia. We have Gia. Now we have Stephanie 6. All of them come with a brand new UV set making them wholly incompatible with the idea of a unimesh in the first instance. All this does is create dozens of tiny niches for future character updates and water down the gene pool.

From a marketing standpoint it makes perfect sense. It gives us a reason to want to buy into character shapes that otherwise we might not want, since that brand new texture is only available with this UV. From an artists standpoint it's just plain frustrating. To this day I still don't understand what benefits the Gia UV set has over the Victoria 6 set or the Olympia set. And no doubt future support for these niche UV's will be minimal, as was the case with Generation 5.

Case in point. I bought Stephanie 5 not for her own textures or shapes, but purely as a prerequisite for the Hayden and Haley teen characters which used her UV set. I've yet to see anyone able to explain precisely why there needed to be a brand new UV set in the first place. No doubt the trend will continue with Aiko 6 and beyond.

Anyway, that's enough of my ranting. I'm sure other people share my frustrations at this. She looks just fine as a figure, and I'd probably get some mileage out of the morphs and texture set, but she's off my wishlist for now until I see what the future brings.

The separate UV sets are so you get the best results for the textures on that shape. If you use a single UV set, you get stretching along the shoulders, the bust line etc.... While this may not always be immediately noticeable, if you look at the wireframe views, you can see the difference as you switch UV sets on a figure. Furthermore, with the new HD etc, DAZ seems to be moving the "quality" notch up the ladder to higher rungs. With the older generation characters, we got used to these issues. Hide the bad spots, change the pose, rotate the camera.... With higher quality textures, we're seeing a much better figure.... and they keep pushing the envelope.

I understand the concept, but unless you're specifically using that shape, you're losing that small amount of optimisation. Honestly, the difference between Gia and Victoria 6 UVs are very small even when you're zoomed in close.

With Genesis, the real power is in being able to dial in a bit of one character and mix in another. So by mixing morphs you're already losing those optimisations the new UV was trying to add. Keeping up with that is already a losing battle. The fear is that the UV set will be another flash in the pan used for the release characters and then promptly discarded to make way for a new one. We've already seen it before with classic Genesis.

With some of these characters you're buying more into the UV set than you are for the figure, and all in the name of product compatibility. Anyway, that's just my narrow-minded view.

    what is that?

G3* V7... Oh - its right around the corner.

*G3 - Hyper-elastic, uni-sex androgenic memory foam mesh than can be morphed into matter with an injection of lifeforce and a lightning bolt. For V7 Specs refer to Kelly LeBrock in "Wierd Science"

More like every 2 months. At this rate, the 7th generation will start coming out at the end of the year.

I thought G3 was the T-X from Terminator 3? 'Cause that would be cool, despite the part where it likely "slaughters you like cattle"...

if the female figure had been titled Eve way back int he day, we'd now be on Eve 6 (which is a cool reference if you're an X-Files fan)

    IIRC:

    June 2013 - Genesis 2F, Victoria 6
    July - Gia
    August - Girl 6
September - (PA Sale, no new DAZ Figures)
October - Teen Josie, Creature Creator for G2F, Creature Creator HD
    November - G2M, Michael 6, M6 & V6 HD
December - Olympia, Big Cats 2
    January - Teen Jayden
    February - Stephanie 6

I'd say one a month is pretty accurate.

6 total, 4 before G2M came out, since then they've been alternating.

I hope we see another adult male figure. I wasn't too happy with Michael 6's head, and the limitations imposed by the face sculpt, hopefully another adult male figure with a more versatile head will be around the pike.

After all, Olympia was a suprise new figure... Ah well, I can dream. =-)
