I need some help!

I have just downloaded the new Daz 4.6. I have loaded it onto my computer and I hope registered it but does this version come without content. I would also like to know how you can get these new Zip files into Daz Studio. I liked the Bit Rock installers much better, at least they knew where to load the content.

If you're downloading manually, go to your account, and check your product library.
Studio comes with the Genesis Starter Essentials and the Genesis 2 Male and Female Starter Essentials, which have do be downloaded and installed separately.
You will find the packages listed in your product library, and also in the DAZ 4.6 description under "This product is a bundle that contains the following products..."
Okay, first of all make sure that you install the Genesis Starter Essentials packs. There should be three files. One for Genesis, one for Genesis 2 Female and one for Genesis 2 Male. These are highly morphable figures from which all of the latest Daz figures are based. Also included amongst this are some basic clothing options as well as surface and lighting options.
For installation it's highly recommended you download the free Daz Install Manager (otherwise known as DIM). It takes a lot of the hard work away from having to manually unzip files into your content folder, once it's set up correctly.
Firstly, open up Daz Studio and press F2 to bring up the Preferences. Select the Content Library tab and then click Content Directory Manager. From here you can find out where Daz will be looking for the content you install. You can either keep this as it is or change it as needed. Either way, remember it so that you know where to extract those zip files.
If you decide to install the DIM then click the cog icon in the top-right of the DIM window to bring up the preferences and ensure that it's installing to the same directory as the one Daz is looking for content.
Any questions or hang-ups, let us know and we'll help as best we can.
Thank you for your replies. So I should first get the DIM thing, then install that, will it install itself in to the right place? Then I should go and pick up the Zip files again and use the 'Download and Install' button to bring them in and it will do all the problem work I can best do without. Daz has changed so much in the last 3 years since I had to give it up.
At the moment I don't want to have to buy anything if I am unable to get it working, so I just want to see if I can use it again.
Paddy
Download and Install DIM, it will install to the correct place itself.
When you run DIM, you have to log in to the DAZ 3D site, a box will pop up when you run DIM asking you to enter your username and password. After you do that, there will be a delay of a few minutes, until DIM gets logged in.
Once DIM is logged in, it will show you all of the content that is available for you to download. DIM will download the files that you select for you, you do not need to go to the store or Product Library to get them, DIM does it all. DIM will also install these files for you.
Before you run DIM for the first time, you should post here to make sure that you have it set up correctly, to put the content where you want it, and whether you want to keep the ZIP files or not, and also, what you want to download, DS Only, Poser Only both DS and Poser or other options.
Thank you Jimmy C. I am about to run this DIM to get it connected, it did tell me to do that. Is there any problems about where it will put things?
By default, DIM puts all of your content into C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Library
Inside DIM you can change the default behaviour if you need to, but I have all of my content in there now, and it loads without a hitch. DIM can only deal with content that it has installed, it does not know of any other content.
Inside DIM, if you click on the little gear icon at the top right, you can decide what DIM will show you. If you only use DS for example, then you don't need to check Poser in the list. See the image below.
Thank you. I do only use (or am trying to use) only Daz, That is enough for my poor brain to cope with at the moment.

Well I think I will go back to my knitting. Daz 4.6 is empty. The DIM thing gave me a message that it didn't install properly. What else can I do.
Should I delete them both and try to start again by downloading them both again. DIM (good name for it) first, then the new DAZ|Studio.
Paddy
Wish I could knit, I would probably be more productive :)
DIM should install to C:\Program Files (x86)\DAZ 3D\DAZ3DIM1 , have you looked to see if it is there?
Sometimes Windows gives out silly messages about things not installing properly, is there an icon on your Desktop?
DAZ Studio wont need to be reinstalled if none of the above works, just DIM, they don't communicate in any way. Try and install DIM again, you should find it in My Account > Product Library, then search for Install Manager Win, download it, and reinstall.
Like me, buy yourself a Knitting machine ;-)
Yes, all is installed where you say they should be. If I download DIM again, should I first Delete the one I have already installed, or will the new download install over the original.
Paddy
Have you tried running DIM from the location that it is installed to? Does it work, or do you get error messages?
I just ran mine from there, it is called DAZ3DIM.EXE, and it runs from the folder it was installed into
C:\Program Files (x86)\DAZ 3D\DAZ3DIM1. Just double click on the file in that folder and it should work. If it doesn't work, you will need to reinstall, but I believe that DIM will uninstall any previous version itself.
Ok, I will try that. Should I be on the Internet to do that.
Paddy
Yes, DIM logs you into your Store Account at DAZ 3D, and is able to read your Product Library, and then offer all of it's contents for download. You CAN work offline as well, of course, but in the first instance there will be nothing much to see :)
Before you download anything using DIM, make sure that you know where it is installing to, and make sure that after it is installed, that DS knows where to find it using Edit > Preferences > Content Library > Content Directory Manager. Make sure to add the path that DIM uses as BOTH DS and Poser Formats.
Well I did what you said, it found (I think) all the stuff I bought from Daz since 2006, the freebies that I have brought in recently do not appear to be on the the list but I would have to check on that. Does that mean it is working, if so, why do I still not have any content what so ever in DS4.6 which I have just downloaded last week and installed.
I am going now to check out my account and see if they are on the list in there. If I can find that, everything has changed so since I last moved around in here.
Paddy
By default, DIM puts all of your content into C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Library
You MUST tell DAZ Studio where it is, or it wont see it. There is no communication between DS and DIM.
You have to go to Edit > Preferences > Content Library > Content Directory Manager in DAZ Studio, and list the path to your content folder. If you used the default in DIM, then it will all be in C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Library, and you MUST add this path as both a Poser Formats AND a DAZ Studio Formats folder.
Then, Exit form DAZ Studio, and run it again, and all of your content should be there.
Here is a set up using the DIM folder only....
Thank you both, pictures help :-), I will have a go but I must first have my lunch. Will check back in later to let you know if I managed to find anything, or if I am going back to my knitting.
Paddy
Well I did check all that you told me too, all seemed to be OK but I still have no content, but did find some lights and shaders, that is all.
Paddy
Most of the free content is in Genesis Starter Essentials, and Genesis Starter Essentials 2, did you install them using DIM? DIM has an installed tab, and if you right click on any item and select Show Installed Files, it will show you all of the files that were installed, and the name of the Library at the top, where they were installed into.
Please look in the Content Library pane (NOT Smart Content) and see if your content is there. It should be installed into DAZ Studio Formats > My DAZ 3D Library People > Genesis, and DAZ Studio Formats > My DAZ 3D Library People > Genesis2
Can you please post an image of your Content Library pane, AND a screenshot of your Content Directory Manager such as Jaderail has posted above? This is important.
I didn't download the Genesis Starter Essentials and Genesis Starter Essentials 2 as I didn' t see them on the download page, so I thought that they would have been in the D4 download. I did notice them with the ad for D4.
On this machine I have not been able to fathom how to get an image of anything to send you. When my friends husband comes next I will have to ask him how to do it. My husband used to show me how to do those things, now I have to get outside help, sorry.
I will go and see if I missed them on the download page while I am in DAZ.
Paddy
To get a screenshot, just press the 'Print Screen' key just above the Numeric Keypad (to the left of Scroll lock)
That puts the image into the buffer, then you need to load Photoshop or similar, and paste it in from there.
DIM should display Genesis Starter Essentials for Genesis and Genesis 2, and it would be much easier to just let DIM install them for you. They are fairly large files, over 400 MB for Genesis Starter Essentials, and about the same for Genesis 2 (Male and Female).
When I looked up DS2 it said 'This product is a bundle that contains the following products', so I thought they would all download as one item.
Well, I have now downloaded all the Essentials with DIM, and I let it install them as well. So now I may have something to try this out with.
What are the templates for, Dim didn't bother with bringing them in as well. Will I need them?
Is that how you use the Print Screen button, I will have to try that sometime. I don't have Photoshop, only Paint Shop Pro, but I suppose that will work the same.
Paddy
It looks like you are all set to go then.
Just make sure that DS is looking for your content, where the DIM installed it to. You need to go to Edit > Preferences > Content Library > Content Directory Manager, and make sure that the path to your content C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Library is listed as BOTH a DS Formats and Poser Formats folder.
The templates are just for creating your own textures, and are not needed to run the content. You would load a template in PSP and then colour it in to use as a texture file. I never bother with them at all.
Thanks for all your help Jimmy, I know I sound stupid but sometimes, if pointed in the right direction, I can finally get it right. I will now go and see if I have something to try out. I may be back, or at least let you know if we have worked it all out.
Thanks again,
Paddy
You are always welcome here Paddy.
If it doesn't work out, just ask :)
I made a picture following the User Guide I printed off. So now I am working through the Guide but don't be surprised, I shall be back with any questions if I get lost again.
I am assuming that all the content that I bought and used before is now obsolete and cannot be used in this version of DA|Studio. So the Rand/Dollar exchange had better sort itself out so that I can afford to buy more content for this version.
Paddy
No, old content still works.
As Mike says, old content still works. Anything that you have bought previously, should appear in the DIM as ready to download, and can be installed in the same way as the Genesis stuff.
There is a plugin called Autofit, which comes with the free DS 4.6 Pro, and it means that you can use Generation 4 (V4, M4 and even K4) clothing on Genesis. Shoes sometimes give problems, but most items will work correctly. Clothing made for Genesis, can also be Autofitted to Genesis 2.
There are other items that you can buy, that will help with these fitting problems, but in general, things are much better now. Genesis is a 'one size fits all' type of character, and clothing is much more useful now, as it can be used on many more characters than ever before.
There have been a great many changes, so if you are not sure, just ask here.
Thanks for telling me that. You can be sure that I will be back with more questions. Everything has changed so that I am lost completely.
