Actually, all online stores should be requiring tax according to whatever state the customer pays from and most shopping cart systems have it built in, so proper sales tax can be collected for their state. They often don't because its really hard for the govt to mandate it, and to the best of my knowledge, they currently don't enforce it (only really requiring it for physical locations where a store exists, and thereby, for that particular state) In the absence of sales tax, you are required to pay your own sales tax on your purchased items online (or anything you don't pay tax on) Ive done a fair amount of research on this coz I once had my own store online. But here's more details...

Edited to add: online stores may also be able to charge tax according to what their state's sales tax rate is. For example, I live in Florida... my store may be online, but its operated out of Florida (for all intent and purpose) Therefore, I could feasibly charge .06% sales tax, to be later filed to Florida state taxes.
I was incorrect on some. They're not top of the pile corporate headquarters, but rather have offices here. MS, Valve, and Amazon I know are corp hq's (and from looking around, Nintendo of America too apparently lol). Googleplex and Adobe's corp hq are in California.
IIRC, Daz, I think it was, went through a bunch of crap regarding taxes in another state simply because they housed a server there. I didn't follow along long enough to find out if a server constituted a physical presence in said state.
The thread has been trimmed as it was turning into a political discussion, contrary to the forum TOS.
I've never paid tax at Daz, but do at Renderosity.
When this subject came up months ago, the forum was told DAZ had employees in the states that had the taxes imposed. There was no site announcement whatsoever.
