A Geometric Shell is like an instance, a live copy of the figure or prop it is made from. It differs from an instance in that it can have different surface settings, including UV Set, so you could use it to create a range of items with the same shape but different colours (crockery on a shelf, for example) or you could apply an overlay such as a water or tattoo to it, with an opacity map, even if the overlay used a different UV set from the base texture.

so if you repose the original, the geoshell will move with the pose or does it need to be recreated?

    does Cararra have geoshells?

    no
    but it has replicators
a geoshell prob more like a duplicate which carrara can do with props
for figures you need Fenric's tree duplicate plugin
or drag your grouped figure and clothes to the browser, save, then drag multiple copys of that saved figure group into the scene

The shell will update, yes. The shell itself is unposable - you can move, rotate, and scale the whole thing as a unit, and you can apply a Push Modifier (in fact one is applied by default, to make it easier to use as an actual shell surrounding the original figure for overlays which is its initial purpose)
