Installing 8.5 with 8.1 on a P.C.

I'm about to install 8.5, but I would like to leave my 8.1 untouched.
I'm not using Genisis or any runtime stuff. I make my own models.
Any tips?
Also will a project started in 8.5 even open in 8.1?
( I may occasionally want to render in my 32 bit version)

Holly gave me the heads up about Fenric's plug in to fix the Fast mip map issue.
( Though I do not yet understand what that is or entails)

    I have both
    neither shares folders

    Great! Just ran the installer all good.
    Do you know if something saves in 8.5 can be opened in 8.1?
