guess they used metaballs and moved them around . that would be one way .
That looks like an animation to me, which I know nothing about. The material looks like something from the material library or another source.
it's definitely an animation, and it says they are using volumetric materials. bet horo would know.
they created an abstract and then zoomed in closeup, to see the materials change. here's a tutorial on animating water to give you an idea of how it was done. http://www.cadtutor.net/tutorials/bryce/animating-materials.php
